Inventors' Day honors the innovations that make life easier - like the snow plow! Before modern plows, snow removal was tough work. First came snow rollers, which packed snow down rather than clearing it. In the 1860s, horse-drawn plows began making roads passable. In 1869, J.W. Elliot invented the rotary snow plow, revolutionizing train travel. Eventually, in 1913, the first snow plow designed for motor equipment was built. Here's to the innovators behind these inventions, paving the way for the powerful machines we rely on today. #InventorsDay

After last weekend's monster winter storm hit the St. Louis area, it’s been all hands on deck! Check out this time-lapse of just one of our salt depots coming back to life—trucks rolling in, contractors loading up, and mountains of salt restocked for the next round of winter weather. ?? Here’s a fun fact: we went through at least 1,900 tons (that’s about 3.8 MILLION pounds) of bulk rock salt and 4,000 bags of ice melt (this does not include treated salt or liquids!). Thanks to all the hardworking contractors and crews out there battling the elements. Already onto the next snowstorm!

Sleet can be deceptively dangerous - it’s much more dense than snow, so take it easy when shoveling. Use extreme caution when driving during or after sleet. Reduce speed, allow plenty of stopping distance, and do not use cruise control. Learn more winter safety at: weather.gov/safety/winter #WinterSafety

?? Happy Winter Solstice! ?? While it might not look like this picture here yet, winter has officially arrived! While many see this as the darkest day of the year, we see it as a turning point. The days start getting longer, and for us, the work never stops. From plows to salt spreaders, we’re ready to keep roads clear and sidewalks safe. To our fellow snow fighters and the communities we serve: cheers to a season of grit, teamwork, and keeping winter under control.

Is your home ready for an ice storm? Ice storms can cause power outages that can last up to several days, affecting both you and the surrounding area - that’s why it’s important to have a week’s supply of food and prescriptions. What else would you need? Ice storms can easily break tree branches, so trim weak or damaged branches around your home, and don’t park your car under trees. After you’ve parked, don’t leave your wipers raised...contrary to popular belief, doing so increases the chance of wiper damage. Slippery sidewalks and roads aren’t the only things to look out for in snow storms - shoveling snow can be a health risk as well. Remember to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, and move only small amounts with each shovel pass. Learn more at: weather.gov/winter #WinterSafety

Meet Beira, the Queen of Winter. We have her to thank for our first snow last week! We also know her as Hailey, who is part of our admin team here at Swinter. On the weekends, she transforms into a part of Scottish folklore - a goddess who can control the winter weather and shape mountains. You can meet Beira at St. Charles Christmas Traditions through December 24th (Fridays-Sundays + Christmas Eve). This festival kicked off last week, and Beira brought us the snow! This year marks 50 years of this fun, holiday spirit-filled festival. For more info about St. Charles Christmas Traditions, visit here: https://lnkd.in/gHNEzuR2
