Secure World Foundation's Chief Director of Space Security and Stability, Victoria Samson, discussed norms of behavior for the safe and sustainable use of outer space at the NSPS Symposium in Tokyo on February 25. Key Takeaways: Norms Shaping Space Law: The history of norms influencing the space legal regime and their impact on current multilateral discussions, with positive outcomes from the 2022-2023 OEWG. Commercial Sector's Role: Industry support, like the DA-ASAT missile test moratorium, reinforces norms of behavior in space governance. Complementary Approaches: Norms and legally binding measures can evolve in parallel, sequentially, or independently to enhance international security. #spacelaw #space #swf

Did you know many choices that are made during the design of a satellite or a constellation will have significant impacts on the space environment? While satellite power systems, propulsion, guidance, and thermal management are widely discussed in many satellite engineering texts and handbooks, their impact on space sustainability and responsible space operations are not always emphasized. Space... the final frontier. Or, just up an escalator or two at the Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore. The Global Space Technology Convention & Convention is underway this week (17th edition, if you're counting). CNA's Julie Yoo is there speaking to experts about this burgeoning sector, from the economic potential (WEF says the space economy will be worth US$1.8t by 2035) to the geopolitical jockeying (US, China, Russia, India, Japan, etc). We hear from Nicolette Yeo about what to watch out for at GSTCE; Michelle Khoo about Deloitte's recent report on the rise of Southeast Asia's space industry (increased Earth Observation data adoption could add US$100b to SEA's GDP by 2030); the president of JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Hiroshi Yamakawa, about how Japan is contributing to the global space ecosystem; and Victoria Samson about establishing rules and regulations in space to keep the peace and avoid conflict. Space is the big story, today and tomorrow on CNA TV. #GSTCE
