The Society of Women Engineers' professional chapter covering the San Diego area

关于我们

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a not-for-profit educational and service organization that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders. Founded in 1950, SWE is the driving force that establishes engineering as a highly desirable career for women through an exciting array of training and development programs, networking opportunities, scholarships, outreach and advocacy activities, and much more. SWE MISSION: Empower women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering and technology professions as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrate the value of diversity and inclusion. SWE VISION: A world with gender parity and equality in engineering and technology. SWE SAN DIEGO: The San Diego County Section (SWE-SD) was chartered in 1982 and is now one of the largest SWE sections in the country. Its programs and publications have won national acclaim, while its growth and dynamic leaders have won national attention. SWE-San Diego is managed by an elected, volunteer Executive Council, responsible for ensuring the financial and professional well-being of the Section. Officers and committee chairs work together to set and accomplish local goals of growth and visibility, while contributing to the Society’s strategic plan. The members of SWE-San Diego come from diverse areas such as government, defense, research, consulting and manufacturing. Whichever field of engineering you are in, you will find like-minded members! SWE-San Diego has gained recognition from many employers that our programs are worth supporting. The large involvement by women engineers sends a message to corporations that SWE’s goals are important.

Today, I celebrated Pi Day in the best way possible—by hosting a Spaghetti Tower Contest for 3rd to 5th graders! ???? The energy in the auditorium was contagious as these young aspiring engineers brainstormed and learned the power of perseverance (and a little structural stability!). One moment that truly stuck with me was seeing a young African-American girl bravely raise her hand to answer an engineering question. She was hesitant at first, but she took that leap—and after experiencing the contest, as she was leaving, she confidently told me she "wants to be an engineer". Moments like these remind me why outreach matters. Sometimes, all it takes is one experience, one challenge, one spark to open a world of possibilities. None of this would have been possible without our amazing Society of Women Engineers - San Diego (SWE-SD) Outreach Committee Mirella Cruz Trinidad, EIT Emerald T. Summer Z. Carlota B. Sahana Kumar Joan Fisher. I am so grateful for this team of passionate, dedicated individuals who pour their hearts into every event. Your commitment to SWE’s mission—to empower and uplift the next generation—continues to inspire me every single day. Shout-out to Liz Pollard for connecting SWE-SD with this elementary school! Getting the signed Thank You card was icing on the cake! I can't wait for our next outreach at Adobe Bluff STEAM Fair & FRC on Friday 3/21/2025, EHR 3/22, & FRC tabling with SHPE 3/23. ?? #SWE #STEMOutreach #PiDay #SpaghettiTowerChallenge #InspiringTheFuture #WomenInSTEM #EngineeringForAll

Aspiring Computer Engineer | Strong advocate for women in engineering

I didn’t truly understand the power of community until I was on stage in front of 500+ people, engaging in a conversation about “finding your tribe”. As I reflected on how the heck I ended up on that stage, I realized that being a part of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) community was more than?helping each other feel like we belong. It also helped me push beyond the bounds I’ve imposed on myself, and essentially pushed me onto the stage. When I had joined SWE, my initial thought was to help inspire younger girls to pursue engineering and to be inspired by professional engineers. However, the more I got involved, the more I realized SWE has to offer. I was very fortunate to have met Dr. Tracy N., now the VP of SWE-San Diego, who challenged me to engage with the community in ways I didn’t see myself doing. First, she invited me to help organize an event, which was something I had never done before, then sharing my community college experiences with girls in underserved communities, which was intimidating for someone afraid of public speaking. Perhaps the most daunting challenge yet was this past weekend, speaking at WE Local San Jose with Dr. Mary Bonk Isaac, an incredible person whom I’ve only dreamed of being on a stage with. Through all these challenges, Dr. Tracy firmly believed that I had what it took, which made me a little more resolute in doing “scary” things I’ve never done before. It goes to show how powerful a single person in a community is in helping individuals continue to “expand” and become better versions of themselves. Imagine what more than one person can do! And I’m so glad I allowed myself to be “expanded.” What a memorable weekend. Grateful for every single one of the conversations. #WELocal25 #SWE
