TEST LAB TUESDAY What are we testing in the lab today? – PLASTIC REGRIND Sometimes a customer requires screening in their process but it’s not to capture a certain size of a product or remove unwanted tramp material from their product. In this case, the need for screening is simply to separate materials for proper disposal. This test is a perfect example of such a process requirement. Our customer had ground plastic that contained liquid sodium hydroxide. They are unable to simply throw out the material due to the corrosive nature of the NaOH. For safe disposal, they were required to remove the corrosive liquid from the ground plastic. TEST LAB TUESDAY What are we testing in the lab today? – SOLAR SALT Solar salt can be produced from either sea water or pumping water down into an underground salt deposit to dissolve the salt. In each case, a saltwater mixture (or brine) is the starting point. The brine is sent to large outdoor ponds where the sunlight warms the pond and evaporates the water, leaving behind a purified salt crystal that can be harvested. The benefit of solar salt over rock salt (which is mined directly from underground salt mines) is that solar salt doesn’t contain the insoluble impurities that rock salt contains. It’s the lack of insoluble impurities that makes solar salt ideal for use in water softeners. This test’s goal was to determine what size round separator would be needed to attain the customer’s required processing rate.
