AI Governance I Digital Consulting I Trace3 : All Possibilities Live in Technology: Innovating with risk-managed AI: Strategies to Advance Business Goals through AI Governance, Privacy & Security
Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology have introduced the AI Agent Index, the first public database dedicated to documenting deployed agentic AI systems. Agentic AI - AI systems capable of reasoning, planning, and executing tasks with minimal human involvement - are becoming increasingly prevalent. However, despite their growing impact, so far there has been no structured framework to track their technical design, applications, and safety measures. To address this, the new AI Agents Index provides an essential resource for understanding the landscape of AI agents, offering insights into: - Technical components, such as reasoning implementation, memory, tool use, and planning. - Application domains, with a focus on areas like software engineering, research, robotics, and computer use. - Risk management practices, including available safety measures, internal testing, and external evaluations. Currently, the AI Agent Index comprises 67 agentic AI systems, each documented with detailed profiles referred to as "agent cards" (see below). These cards provide comprehensive information on various aspects of each system, including the technical components, application domains, and risk management practices mentioned above. * * * The AI Agent Index categorizes these systems based on their level of autonomy and decision-making capability: - Lower-Level Agents (Human-Guided Execution): Many AI systems in the index function as simple processors, routers, or tool-callers, automating specific tasks but still requiring human-defined constraints. - Mid-Level Agents (Adaptive Automation): Some systems demonstrate multi-step planning and contextual adaptation, allowing them to refine execution iteratively. These are often used in software development and decision-support applications. - Higher-Level Agents (Toward Autonomy): While a few systems push toward full autonomy, this remains largely theoretical due to technical, ethical, and safety concerns. * * * Key Insights from the AI Agent Index: - Agentic AI adoption is accelerating – Nearly half of the indexed systems were deployed in the second half of 2024. - Most systems specialize in software engineering and computer-based tasks, with applications divided into six categories: software, computer use, universal, research, robotics, and other. - Transparency on safety remains limited, with only 19.4% of AI systems publicly disclosing a formal safety policy, and fewer than 10% reporting external safety evaluations. * * * Explore the full database: https://lnkd.in/gnK3arng Read the research paper: https://lnkd.in/gJpwtKBx Kudos to the authors: Stephen Casper, Luke Bailey, Rosco Hunter, Carson E., Emma Cabale, Michael Gerovitch, Stewart S., Kevin Wei, Nikola Jurkovic, Ariba Khan, Phillip Christoffersen, A. Back by popular demand: big tech’s overlapping genAI startup investments. Since we last published this graphic in December 2023, 8 more companies have joined the table. Amazon, Google, and NVIDIA in particular have ramped up their overall AI dealmaking in the last year. The investments indicate the strategic importance big tech is placing on the emerging genAI landscape. Look at the Nvidia column. It’s investing in everyone.

The LLM developer landscape is dividing into the haves and have nots in terms of funding, valuations, and revenue. Here are the top-valued private LLM developers based on CB Insights data: 1. OpenAI ($157B valuation) 2. Databricks ($62B) 3. Anthropic ($60B) 4. xAI ($50B) 5. Mistral AI ($6.2B) 6. Cohere ($5.5B) 7. Inflection ($4B) - pivoted away from frontier model development in 2024 8. Moonshot AI ($3.3B) 9. Zhipu AI ($3B) 10. Minimax AI ($2.5B) Pure-play developers OpenAI and Anthropic lead in adoption and revenue in 2024: *OpenAI: $3.7B in projected revenue (42x) *Anthropic: $850M-$1B in annualized revenue (60x - 71x) Separate from the kerfuffle around Elon Musk’s recent bid, OpenAI is in talks to raise $40B at a valuation as high as $300B. And while developers like DeepSeek have shown small players can push performance forward, US developers are betting on their advantages in compute and data to widen their lead as the cost curve shifts.
