?? After Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the waste and resource recovery sector is working tirelessly to help communities rebuild. ?? From clearing over 1.3M cubic yards of debris in one county, to managing daily operations, these professionals are the backbone of disaster recovery. “I have worked in this industry for over 28 years, and this is the worst I have ever seen,” says Chris Collins, deputy director of utilities in Florida’s Manatee County. “When it’s all done, we expect to collect triple the amount of debris compared to Hurricane Ian.” Hurricanes can generate massive amounts of waste made up of broken trees, household items, appliances, and hazardous materials that block access to roads and clog up drainage systems, worsening flooding in already hard-hit areas. ?? Thanks to the dedication of many waste and resource recovery workers, neighborhoods are being restored to safety and cleanliness, ensuring faster recovery. ?? Let’s recognize these unsung heroes for their hard work in restoring normalcy after the storms!?Read the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/eY8TZ6n6 #HurricaneRecovery #ResourceManagement #SolidWaste #WasteManagement #Community #SWANA #NaturalDisaster #CleanUp #Recovery?

Today, SWANA proudly joins 60+ partners in advocating for two bipartisan bills that will transform the US recycling system. These bills aim to make recycling more accessible, efficient, and sustainable. Nearly 40 million US residents lack the same level of access to recycling as they have to garbage service. Many valuable recyclable materials are not captured for recycling into new packaging and materials. SWANA is committed to working toward a future where recycling is a seamless part of our lives, contributing to a healthier planet. This legislation is a big step toward tackling the waste crisis and moving us toward a circular economy. Let’s bring these bills to the finish line! November 15 is America Recycles Day—a day to recognize the importance of recycling and its positive impact on our environment. The US EPA has set an ambitious goal to raise the US recycling rate to 50% by 2030. To reach this goal, it’s crucial to recycle the right items. Cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans, and paper are typically accepted, but items like plastic bags are often mistakenly placed in recycling bins. Check with your local recycling provider to confirm what’s accepted and help prevent contamination. Let's all play our part—every action counts!? Recycling supports jobs in waste and resource management, conserves natural resources like timber and water, conserves landfill space, and so much more.? SWANA has consistently advocated for improved recycling infrastructure, including support for US legislation – the Recycling Infrastructure Accessibility Act (S. 1189/H.R. 6159) and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (S. 1194/H.R. 4040). A heartfelt thank you to SWANA members, especially those in Materials Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and recycling communications and collections who work tirelessly to keep recycling systems moving. Your dedication is essential to achieving a more sustainable future. You make recycling happen!
