??It's official! Our bill, the #DEFIANCEAct, which addresses and prevents nonconsensual deepfake pornography, was introduced in the #Senate! The recent news with #TaylorSwift shows just how pervasive this issue is.?A majority of victims are not public figures and are unable to take action. Deepfake porn uses #artificialintelligence to transplant a person’s face onto sexually explicit videos or images. The #DEFIANCEAct would provide victims a civil right of action to seek justice. Here’s some facts we can’t stop thinking about: - As of 2023, 98% of AI deepfakes were pornographic. - Women, girls, and LGBTQ+ individuals are most likely to be targets of sexual AI-based manipulation. - Women public figures such as celebrities and journalists are more likely to be targets of sexist and political disinformation than their male counterparts. - Most researched AI systems hold a gender bias – for example generating images of white men in response to prompts asking for a picture of an engineer. - Older individuals online – particularly older women – are the most likely to be targets of AI-powered scams and crimes. We have spent centuries fighting for gender equality, and yet risk undoing much of that progress due to new technologies that tech companies are hesitant to regulate because of potential profit cuts. There is a better solution to this – there are ways to mitigate AI-based bias and abuse without compromising the benefits of AI. That’s why we’re thrilled to be joining We Are UltraViolet and 27 other digital and human rights organizations in an open letter outlining crucial demands for Big Tech companies to take as a major first starting point in protecting against gendered AI harms.
