关于我们

The Sexual Violence Law Center (SVLC) is a nonprofit law firm that seeks to improve the legal response to survivors of sexual violence. Our advocacy is based in race and gender equity principles. SVLC is the only legal aid program of its kind in Washington, providing holistic legal assistance and representation exclusively to victims of sexual violence, assault, abuse, harassment and stalking. Our Approach SVLC seeks to break and reshape the legal system that has upheld rape culture, victim blaming and gender-based violence, building our work on the shoulders of giants like Kimberle Crenshaw, Anita Hill, Christine Blasey Ford, Sarah Deer, and Tarana Burke. Instead of working on only one legal issue, we provide holistic legal services, meaning we address all the survivor’s legal needs as a consequence of the sexual violence.

  • Sexual Violence Law Center's Advocacy Counsel is in Olympia speaking before the House Community Safety, Justice & Reentry committee with our colleagues from Northwest Justice Project, King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, The Office of Civil Legal Aid, The Office of Crime Victims Advocacy and other advocates and survivors about victim rights, funding cuts, and resources. There is much work to be done if we want a more trauma-informed and survivor-centered world.

  • Yesterday, today, tomorrow– we advocate for survivor justice and perpetrator accountability. We call out privileged individuals and powerful systems that excuse rape culture and perpetuate sexual violence. We always stand in solidarity with our beautiful, brilliant, and resilient survivor communities. The fight continues.

  • Financial control is one of the most significant weapons an abuser has in ensuring a survivor remains isolated and unable to access support and resources.?This week Sexual Violence Law Center joined a?roundtable discussion with survivors and providers who shared their stories and insights with Senator Patty Murray on the SAFE Act, which will offer crucial workplace protections for survivors like safe leave, job security, and anti-discrimination measures. This legislation will make a real difference in ensuring that survivors have the support and safety they need to regain their lives. Stay tuned for updates on the upcoming legislation – you can join our mailing list at?https://lnkd.in/ghuxi2BQ

  • Seattle City Council has reintroduced a prostitution loitering ordinance which was unanimously repealed in 2020. SVLC has seen the ways that criminalization of sex work further marginalizes survivors of violence. Advocacy Counsel Elizabeth Hendren shared with The Stranger how a prostitution arrest on a person’s record can make it harder for them to secure housing or find a job, and the imposition of court fines and fees can make leaving sex work that much harder. We oppose this ordinance. To learn more about the proposed prostitution law, read The Stranger's article at https://lnkd.in/gX7VJZp4

43% cited fear of the justice system.

80-95% of sexual assault victims do not report the crime to law enforcement. This happens for several reasons, including fear of how professionals or loved ones will react, and how they will be treated by the criminal justice system if they do report. In one study: 68% stated they did not report due to fear of reprisal. 63% feared they would be blamed for their sexual assault. 57% of survivors did not want others to know about the sexual assault. 43% cited fear of the justice system. 51% cited concern that there was not enough proof of the crime. 6% of victims cited the simple fear of not being believed if they reported. (Wolitzky-Taylor et al., 2011b) All this points to a need for alternative reporting options, such as Seek Then Speak. To learn more, visit: https://lnkd.in/gpu7_d6Q

  • Today, we say farewell to Amy, a remarkable paralegal who has been an integral part of the SVLC team for the past three years. Amy’s dedication and compassion have touched the lives of many, and her contributions have been invaluable. One of Amy's favorite memories from her time at SVLC is working on a protection order case for a survivor. The impact of this case was profound, as it allowed the survivor to feel safe enough to pursue their passions, like going back to finish school. "The survivors we work with are the bravest people I know. Even after so much pain and hurt, knowing that our client finally felt safe to be themselves again was such a strong confirmation of the what SVLC strives for and our drive to uplift and safeguard survivor voices. For nearly 3 years I worked alongside such dedicated staff, leaders, and lawyers & it’s an honor I will forever cherish!" This experience is a testament to Amy's commitment to justice and her ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those she has served. As she embarks on the next chapter of her journey, we are excited to share that she will be starting law school. We have no doubt that she will continue to excel and inspire in her legal career. Thank you, Amy, for your hard work, compassion, and unwavering dedication. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!
