Best Seahawk Sun Run yet! This year we continued our partnership with the University of North Carolina Wilmington and hosted the race on campus as a Homecoming event. The race would not have been possible without UNCW Advancement, who facilitated the inclusion of UNCW Office of Sustainability, highlighting the trail system on campus we used as the race route, and Hidden Grounds Coffee, spotlighting a local alumni-owned business! Thank you to Rita Cronin for being the best event co-coordinator a girl could ask for! Shout out to Georgia Rowe and Sammy C. Hawk for bringing the Seahawk Spirit and paws4people? foundation for bringing the cutest puppy cheerleaders Saturday morning! Thank you to Go Time and Fleet Feet for their support of the race and Campus Creations for the coolest race shirt!

Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of GIS Day, an annual celebration of the innovative geospatial technologies transforming industries worldwide. In honor of GIS Day, I submitted and briefly presented The Seahawk Trail System Story Map during UNCW’s celebration, competing in a friendly GIS competition against six other professionals—and won! I’m grateful to everyone who organized this event and created a space for building connections within the GIS community. If you have not already, check out The Seahawk Trail System -https://lnkd.in/dMXEvR7j and keep an eye out for a few additional trails coming in the next few weeks!!

Intelligent Systems Engineering, Computer Science Minor, UNCW Garden Club President

A few months ago, I was approached by UNCW’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Felicia Lee, and UNCW Greenhouse Manager, Mia Aguilar, with an exciting challenge: growing produce for 20-25 people for the 1st Annual Applied Learning Garden Harvest Meal. The Garden Club and I recognized what an incredible opportunity this was, eagerly accepted the challenge, and began optimizing our fall garden for maximum production. In partnership with the UNCW Greenhouse, we successfully produced 26.5 pounds of sweet potatoes, root vegetables, leafy greens, and herbs for this one-of-a-kind event. Last night, we saw it all come together in one of the most memorable experiences of my college journey. It was an honor to share my experiences as Garden Club President, network with others in the sustainability community, and enjoy a delicious four-course meal featuring our organically grown produce, expertly prepared by an amazing chef. We’re excited about the future of sustainability at UNCW, and I am proud to be part of it. Special thanks to Lily Bassett and Noah Simmons for all their hard work. As well UNCW Office of Sustainability for putting this all together.

  • Such an incredible time to celebrate the success of the UNCW Garden Club and all of the people that make these things possible!!

Chief Sustainability Officer at University of North Carolina Wilmington

Last night we had our first Harvest Meal to celebrate the success and hard work of students in our Applied Learning Garden Program. Produce grown and harvested just outside this space was used throughout our four-course meal. We heard from the president of the UNCW Garden Club about his experience working in the gardens, as well as from the chief sponsor of our half acre garden regarding the future of that space. I'm a firm believer that the strongest programs start with great conversations. The best ideas come about with folx talking over a cup of coffee, a bottle of wine, or a really good meal. It's these honest conversations and collaborative relationships that breath strength and life into a program and help to ensure its success. Our guests were from all areas of campus. Half of them had never seen our greenhouse or knew about the gardens there. All of them left full, happy, and excited about the garden program and how they can be involved in the future. It was a good night - filled with laughter and possibility. Special thanks to Whitney Formon and Casey Shotton for holding down the conversations at the tables and Mia Hayes Aguilar for sharing her space at the greenhouse and allowing us to hold this wonderful event. And of course, if it wasn't for Samuel Stasiewicz and the UNCW Garden Club, we wouldn't have a reason to celebrate. Y'all are the real heroes ??
