This week Morningstar Sustainalytics’ Thomas Eveson, Vice President, Corporate Solutions is at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. He’ll be speaking about blue financing and scaling sustainable development. Below he shares what are some of the key focus areas for this year’s conference.?Looking forward to more insights from Tom over the next two weeks!??
#COP29 is underway in #Baku, Azerbaijan! Already, it’s clear we’re shifting from planning to action, with a focus on impact and outcomes. This year’s theme centers on *how* to drive change. I’ll be speaking on panels about Blue Financing, Impact and Transparency, and scaling sustainable development in underserved regions. ??Key Topics 1. Climate Finance Goals: The focus has moved beyond fossil fuel commitments to the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) for climate finance, aiming to set more ambitious support for climate mitigation and transitions in developing countries with the previous $100bn as the floor. 2. Transition Finance and Reporting: Transition finance takes center stage this year, with emphasis on inclusive strategies for all sectors, including hard-to-abate industries like cement, aviation, and steel. Panels will cover innovative financing mechanisms, especially public-private partnerships, to drive sustainable projects in emerging markets. 3. Transparency and Accountability: Reporting standards, data transparency, and consistent tracking of transition finance strategies are key priorities. Many sessions address guidelines for assessing financed projects, with a focus on ensuring accountability. 4. Blue Economy: Ocean finance has a strong presence, with new organizations, partnerships, and funds dedicated to supporting the Blue Economy. 5. Sustainable Development in the Global South: Beyond commitments, the critical question is *how* to deploy capital effectively for renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and other essential projects. Scaling deployment remains a significant challenge. ? Goals for COP29 ?? NCQG Climate Finance Target – Secure renewed commitments from developed nations to support climate action in developing regions. ?? Operationalizing Carbon Markets – Establish final Article 6 rules to enable cost-effective emissions reductions and support sustainable development. ?? Just Transition Action Plan – Develop a plan to ensure an equitable low-carbon transition for workers and communities affected by the shift from fossil fuels. ?? Mobilizing Private Capital – New initiatives aim to attract private investment for emerging markets and high-emission sectors. ?? Enhanced Reporting Initiatives – Focused on boosting transparency and accountability across sustainable finance. ? What This Means This new phase emphasizes opportunities for credible, impactful financing across industries and heightened expectations for governments, corporations, and investors to set clear transition goals. AI and other technologies are set to enhance transparency, pushing measurement and reporting to new standards. To reshape investment markets, there are two main approaches for meaningful change: regulation, and incentives. No truer does this manifest than in the experiments being applied to the global sustainable investment landscape, writes Morningstar Sustainalytics' managing director of ESG solutions, Catalina Secreteanu. "What’s yet to be proven, however, is which is more effective." https://lnkd.in/e4hz8d3D #SustainableInvestment #Regulation #InvestmentIncentive
