关于我们
SuSanA is an informal network of people and organisations who share a common vision on sustainable sanitation and who want to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG6. Learn more about our definition of sustainable sanitation here. SuSanA came into existence in early 2007. Since then, it has been providing a platform for coordination and collaborative work. SuSanA connects members to a community of people with diverse expertise and opinions. SuSanA also serves as sounding board for innovative ideas. Finally, SuSanA contributes to policy dialogue through joint publications, meetings and initiatives. The SuSanA website – with its library, project database and discussion forum – is an important resource for anyone wanting to explore the possibilities of sustainable sanitation. SuSanA is not itself an organisation but a loose voluntary network to which partners and individual members contribute at their own expense. The secretariat is currently carried out by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in Bonn, Germany.

At #COP28, SuSanA joined forces with the GIZ Water&Sanitation Cluster to spotlight the critical role of #sanitation in tackling #climatechange. From insightful discussions during key sessions to the impactful Holy Shit! Screening at the Water Pavilion, we worked together to amplify the message: sustainable sanitation is essential for a resilient future. ???
????Looking back on COP29???? #COP29 in Azerbaijan has been both engaging and insightful for the #GIZ Water & Sanitation Cluster. We have had the privilege of contributing to key discussions, exploring innovative approaches and connecting with partners and stakeholders who share our commitment to sustainable water and #WASH solutions. Here are some highlights: ??We began with the inauguration of the Water for Climate Pavilion, setting the stage for impactful dialogues throughout the two weeks. The inauguration was led by our Group Leader Climate and Climate Policy Holger Treidel. We were also very happy to have UN Secretary-General Special Envoy on Water Retno L. Marsudi deliver the opening remarks! ??Our session "Towards Climate-Neutral, Inclusive Urban Water and Sanitation" with Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance/UN-Habitat (GWOPA) sparked discussions on integrating inclusive WASH solutions into urban #climate strategies. There, Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven, managing director at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, delivered an inspiring opening speech in the session on practical pathways for financing urban resilience and aligning investments with resilience goals. ??We also had the opportunity to host a film screening of the feature-length documentary "Holy Shit", which offered a thought-provoking look at innovative and unconventional solutions in the sanitation sector. We were particularly pleased to have the filmmaker Rubén Abru?a join us on the panel! ??Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA)'s report "Water Resilience for Economic Resilience" (WR4ER), introduces a new approach to planning climate-resilient investments in the water sector, aimed at promoting sustainable business and economic growth. ??During our session on Climate-informed Transboundary Water Management as a tool for achieving progress within UAE Framework for Climate Resilience we discussed how water-related impacts of climate change cross international borders and how effective transboundary cooperation across water-dependent sectors is crucial to build climate resilience. ??Nearly 50 countries signed the Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action! The declaration commits to taking integrated approaches to combat the causes and impacts of climate change on water basins, paving the way for greater regional and international cooperation. After these inspiring two weeks we are energised by the momentum and are ready to continue our work towards sustainable, resilient water solutions. Thank you to everyone who joined our sessions and engaged in meaningful dialogue. We look forward to building on these discussions! We would also like to thank everybody who played a part in organising the sessions, both directly as a speaker and behind the scenes.?A special thank you to Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven, Jochen Renger and Holger Treidel for your commitment to anchoring water as a (climate) resilience multiplier!

IKI Small Grants: 6th Call for Proposals ???Apply now! Up to 200,000 euros for local climate and biodiversity action ? ??? Jennifer Morgan kicks off new funding round at COP29 in Baku ? ???Local organisations in ODA-eligible countries can apply for funding until 15 January 2025 ? The IKI Small Grants are part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Government. They provide funding between 60,000 and 200,000 euros for project proposals focusing on?one or more of the following IKI funding areas: ? ·????????Mitigating greenhouse gas emissions ·????????Adapting to the impacts of climate change ·????????Preserving and restoring natural carbon sinks with a focus on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation ·????????Conserving biological diversity ? The selected organisations are accompanied and supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, which implements the IKI Small Grants Programme on behalf of Germany’s Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, the Ausw?rtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) Germany, and the Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, nukleare Sicherheit und Verbraucherschutz (BMUV). ? Local projects for climate and biodiversity action worldwide In five calls for proposals, 120 projects in over 50 countries have been selected so far since 2019. These actors are essential as agents of change. They are at the frontline where climate change and biodiversity loss show the greatest impact. Besides financing, organisations and actors receive support in building their role as strong actors. ? For example, in Nepal, reforestation efforts by various IKI Small Grants projects have restored 5,000 hectares of woodland; around the size of the country’s capital, Kathmandu. Colombian local organisation Fundación Con Vida managed to reforest 12 hectares of wetlands with native tree species in swamps that are home to manatee, pumas and jaguars currently under threat of extinction. Organisations ready to make an impact are invited to step forward and apply and contribute to the shared goal of local climate action for global change. ? ???? #WorldToiletDay 2024: Toilets – A Place of Peace ???? Dear SuSanA members and friends, ? This year’s theme, “Toilets: A Place of Peace,” gives us a chance to reflect on how something as simple as a toilet can transform lives and bring calm where it’s needed most. For many of us, the privacy and safety of a toilet are parts of daily life we rarely stop to think about. But sadly, for billions around the world, a lack of access to sanitation still means that something as basic as a peaceful moment alone to relieve oneself is a rare luxury. ? When we talk about “toilets as places of peace,” we are really talking about health, dignity, and opportunity. From schoolchildren in safe sanitation facilities to families in homes free of contamination, the impact of toilets reaches far and wide. ? On this day, let’s celebrate impactful initiatives and share solutions that are making a difference in ensuring access to a safe and clean toilet for all, such as: ?? the work done in Kiritimati Island to become a model circular economy society by integrating innovative water and sanitation solutions. Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/esZwzSWZ ?? the importance of looking beyond the infrastructure in order to achieve equitable and inclusive sanitation for all gender identities. ???? The GIZ Water and Sanitation Cluster at COP29 in Azerbaijan ???? I am pleased to share that the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Water and Sanitation Cluster will be making an active contribution to this year’s #COP29. As we join global efforts in Azerbaijan, our focus will be on highlighting why water is a critical element of effective climate action. Water is not just a sector – it’s a vital connector across health, food security, and ecosystem resilience. By integrating WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) solutions into climate strategies, we address both mitigation and adaptation, helping communities build resilience against climate change impacts. We look forward to connecting at several key sessions that we will be co-organizing (details in the image below) and at the Water for Climate Pavilion in the Blue Zone. Let’s engage in dialogue on how integrated water solutions can drive sustainable climate action and foster resilience across sectors. We especially invite you to our joint session with Global Water Operators' Partnerships Alliance/UN-Habitat (GWOPA) on Climate-Resilient Infrastructure, Governance, and Financing, featuring an opening by Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven, Managing Director of GIZ on Wednesday November 13 (4:00pm to 5:30pm).
