While the intention-action gap hasn't been resolved yet, #paperization is one packaging trend that will help to bridge the gap. Could the solution to plastic waste be as straightforward as #standardization? We already have several standardized product categories, like: ?? Milk ?? Cereal ?? Toothpaste ?? Protein and snack bars In her most recent article for Trellis Group, SPC Director Olga Kachook investigates how significant advances in #waste #reduction can be made when we simplify and standardize. This past spring, our 2024 Packaging Innovations Trends Report featured "The Paperization of Everything" as one of the five major #innovations #trending in the #packaging industry. Now, we're entering a new era of #Paperization, with #alternative and non-wood #fibers. ????? Our new guide, Evaluating Alternative & Non-Wood Fiber Use in Packaging, investigates important considerations for utilizing non-wood fiber sources across the packaging #life #cycle, from sourcing through end-of-life. It addresses questions like: ? Can alternative fiber sources play a role in reducing pressure on forested lands? ? Can alternative fibers provide the packaging industry with a reliable alternative to wood fibers? ? Does using alternative fibers enable brands to create packaging with a lower environmental footprint? Explore the guide: https://ow.ly/jTFN50Thvl0

At their foundational level, all Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) programs have one thing in common: producers. But, there is no universal definition of "producer," or definition of which entities are exempt. Our next policy mini-resource, launching soon, clarifies who is exempt (or not obligated to participate) from contributing to the financial, operational, or combined program in each state with EPR in place. Stay tuned!

California lawmakers have approved legislation that would ban #plastic #bags at grocery stores. If signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, the ban would go into effect in 2026 and require stores to provide only #recycled paper bags to customers at the checkout. This would revise California's 2014 law that banned single-use plastic bags at grocery stores, but allowed for thicker plastic bags intended for reuse to be provided to shoppers. https://lnkd.in/gNEwippv
