Why do humpback whales breach? ???? While it does look rather fun to hurl your 80,000 pound body from the sea to the sky, there is more to this behavior than just entertainment. Scientists believe that humpback whales breach out of the water as a way of communicating with other whales. ?? For small distances, simply slapping the surface of the ocean with their fins and flukes will suffice. But for long distances, it's time to make the big splash. BIG WIN for the ocean: France & Spain have become the first EU countries to ratify the #HighSeasTreaty! ??? The High Seas Treaty—formally known as the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement—is a legally binding international instrument that aims to address the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas "beyond national jurisdiction.” This accounts for TWO THIRDS of the global ocean. ?? In 2023, the Treaty was formally adopted by UN member states to ensure at least 30% protection of the ocean by 2030. But before this protection enters into force, the Treaty needs to be ‘ratified’ by at least 60 UN members. To date, 17 countries have ratified the Treaty, with France and Spain as the latest—and the first of the EU. ?? Other champion countries include Palau, Chile, Belize, Timor Leste, Singapore, Seychelles, Saint Lucia, Panama, Monaco, Federated States of Micronesia, Mauritius, Maldives, Cuba, Barbados, and Bangladesh. With France as the co-host of the upcoming #UNOceanConference in June, this sends a strong signal to the rest of the world that it is time they follow suit and step up for the ocean.
