Good news from the deep! ?? The Nordic Council, which includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and ?land, has voted IN FAVOR of a resolution calling for a moratorium on #DeepSeaMining. ?? Among these member nations, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden have already declared their own formal opposition to this destructive practice, calling for a 'precautionary pause' until more comprehensive and concrete scientific research can be done to determine the true impacts of the industry. This historic milestone sends a clear message to members Iceland and Norway, who have thus far been outspokenly in favor of deep-sea mining exploration, that this will not be tolerated under the Council. SOA's Salvador Hub is currently on the ground at G20 in Brazil—an international economic forum comprised of 20 member nations, the European Union, and the African Union. This year, Brazil made history by launching the Social G20 and spotlighting the Oceans 20 agenda, shaping a future led by the Global South. This social summit focuses on drawing valued input from civil society members, with a prioritization for those in low-income communities, to be applied to the objectives and goals of the main G20 event. Inhale. Exhale. Breathe. In times of high stress and anxiety, sometimes all you can do is come back to your breath and simply... breathe. Here is a meditative breathing exercise for you to practice: Follow the sounds and motion of the waves, inhale 4 seconds as the letters expand, hold, and exhale 4 seconds as the letters contract. Keep this pace for 1-2 minutes (more if you have time). Ground yourself into your other senses. Notice where your body, soul, and mind wander, and bring it back to center. Feel your heart rate slow to a restful pace. Stay here for a while. When you are ready to move on, do so with intention. Then, do at least one nice thing for yourself, for others, and for Mother Earth. And pass it on. ???

What is #COP16 and what are Sustainable Ocean Alliance young leaders up to on the ground? ?? Right now in Cali, Colombia, thousands of international delegates are gathered to discuss and negotiate global efforts to protect biodiversity under the UN Convention on Biodiversity (CBD). ?? Despite separate mandates, CBD and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (aka UNFCCC, which will convene next month for #COP29 in Azerbaijan) are highly complementary and can effectively collaborate. ?? ?? Ocean-based solutions can support these synergies, weaving a ‘blue thread’ across national biodiversity and climate strategies. As an accredited organization, SOA is proud to support a delegation of 16 young ocean professionals to partake in these important discussions and decision-making processes. We know more than anything, young people are leading the urgency & equitable/just perspectives that are needed to address our polycrisis.
