SFC is honored to be the ONLY recipient of #GusNIP grant funding in Texas, thanks to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)! Not only are we the only awardee in the state, SFC also received one of the largest awards in the nation at $8.7 million! So what does this mean for Texas? This transformative funding supports our flagship food access program, Double Up Food Bucks Texas (Double Up Texas), which doubles SNAP benefits at participating grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and farm stands helping customers to take home MORE fresh produce. By expanding access to affordable, nutritious food, Double Up Texas promotes better community health outcomes and boosts demand for fresh fruits and vegetables, supporting small-scale Texas farmers. Over the next four years, we’ll triple the number of participating Double Up Texas sites statewide, investing in community health, land, and farmer livelihoods. This funding also supports our free cooking and nutrition classes in English and Spanish through The Happy Kitchen / La Cocina Alegre?, ensuring families have the skills to enjoy fresh, local food at home. Sustainable Food Center team members loved connecting with the community at this year’s Panhandle South Plains Fairr! It was an honor to be asked to share nutrition, food access, and food sustainability resources alongside other area nonprofits as part of the the first ever Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Horticulture Exhibit. Thanks to y’all’s support, we gave away 43 bags filled with 200 lbs of local produce and connected with over 400 families in the West Texas community! The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre, an SFC program, also hosted three cooking demonstrations featuring THK/LCA curriculum and recipes utilizing locally grown produce from WTX growers. Until next year!
