Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit 2024 is in the books - so much grattitude to the Seafood Legacy team for an amazing event. I had the honor of sharing the stage with Wakao Hanaoka, CEO of Seafood Legacy, and Jim Cannon CEO of SFP, to reflect on a decade of the sustainable seafood movement in Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific region and to look forward to the next 10 years (both of whom I’ve worked with in different seasons of my career, and who I look up to dearly). A few takeaways from the session: 1.) what happens in Japan affects the entire Asia-Pacific - if sustianable seafood is only driven by Western markets then we’re missing the big picture; 2.) the best solutions are locally driven, and developed collaboratively and amicably across stakeholders from industry, gov’t, and NGOs; 3.) as a business in seafood or fisheries, be fearless to take on sustainability and social responsibility - you’ll be rewarded in the end and you’ll find people willing to support you; 4.) we’re in it for the long haul - labor audits haven’t proved to be enough / it’s proactive human rights due diligence - environmentally sustainable seafood is a result of capacity building for govt (and industry), and their ability to implement fisheries mgmt - the starting point is usually simply collecting data. 5.) We have an amazing Asia Fisheries team at Ocean Outcomes - and truly the next generation of seafood champions!

Live from the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions Conference – We are excited to announce that we signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Seafood and Gender Equality (SAGE) to advance gender equality in the seafood sector! ???? The partnership will focus on engaging with SFP’s Supply Chain Roundtables (SRs), to provide them with the knowledge, expertise, and resources they need to address gender inequalities in their respective sectors. SR member companies will be introduced to SAGE’s flagship Gender Equality Dialogues (GED) program, which promotes innovation and workforce development in the sectors by co-creating space for industry leaders to develop actionable solutions to address gender inequalities. SAGE will also pilot its gender equity index tool to assess SFP’s internal operations. We can’t wait to work together to address gender equality, empower women, and improve fisheries! The policy brief reviews the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) passed by the European Parliament in April 2024. October is National Seafood Month! ?? The United States is acknowledged as a worldwide leader in sustainable seafood practices for both wild-caught and farmed fish. This month, we celebrate U.S. seafood culture and the fishers and fish farmers that work everyday to advance sustainable practices. In honor of National Seafood Month, the Walton Family Foundation published a new poll finding that four out of five Americans (80%) agree that “if you care about our food supply, you should care about oceans and healthy ocean ecosystems.” A strong majority of adults (84%) believe that, because three billion people worldwide rely on seafood as their primary source of protein, it is important to “promote sustainable seafood and protect the health of fish in oceans." In the morning session of the second day of the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit,（#TSSS2024）, speakers from seafood governments in South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, NGOs and a foundation had presentations. Takeshi Mori (Fisheries Agency of Japan, Director-General) , Jooyoun Lee (Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Republic of Korea, Policy analyst) and Wei-Hsiang Chang (Fisheries Agency, Section Chief) shared each country's efforts for seafood sustainability. Each of them tries to improve seafood sustainability in its own way ?? After that, Chris Ninnes (Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) , CEO) introduced how the ASC has been grown and how it's been developed in Japan. Jim Cannon (Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, CEO and Founder) shared that how data, regulation and compliance are the cores for effective fishery management. These three elements are useful not only for fishery management but also for when we review the efforts for seafood sustainability in general. Lastly, Sarah Hogan (The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Interim Director and Program Officer) looked back the path of the sustainable seafood movement in Japan and emphasized that the foundation will focus on improving human rights and establishing equity in the seafood sector. SFP calls for industry-led collaboration to overhaul fisheries management in developing nations Jim Cannon, CEO and founder of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP), stressed the urgent need for a major overhaul in global fisheries management, particularly in developing nations, during his speech. “The future of fisheries management isn’t in Alaska,” he remarked. “Alaska [and the US] is a rich country that can afford central taxation, fund scientists, conduct independent research cruises, and maintain a robust Coast Guard and fisheries inspectors.” Click below to read the full story from Masahiko Takeuchi, reporting live from the tenth edition of the Tokyo Sustainable Seafood Summit, taking place from Oct. 8 for three days at the Tokyo International Forum.
