We're gearing up for our first large-scale event of the year... EARTH WEEK 2024!?? Join us in connecting to our coastlines throughout Earth Week in Waimānalo, from April 21st to April 27th (see registration for event times). Throughout the week, we will be celebrating Earth Week in the best ways we know how: through stewardship, community, and fun! This year, instead of our annual Earth Day Festival, we're breaking up activities into four separate events throughout the week, working with our partners GoFarm Hawai'i, Bellows Conservation Program, Full Circle Farm, and the Nation of Hawai'i. Volunteer events will range from a beach cleanup at Bellows Beach, to upstream restoration work at the Nation of Hawai'i, and everything in between! What seems small to us can sometimes be catastrophic to others...????? Even the most minuscule plastics can have life-threatening effects on both humans, and all other life forms around us! Who are these hidden culprits, and what exactly is it that they do? To name a few, there are: 1. Bisphenol A (BPA): BPA is a chemical compound used in the production of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. It is known to mimic the hormone estrogen and has been linked to various health issues, including reproductive disorders, developmental problems, and certain cancers. BPA can leach out of plastic containers, particularly when they are heated or come into contact with acidic or fatty foods. 2. Phthalates: Phthalates are a group of chemicals used as plasticizers to make plastics more flexible and durable. They have been associated with hormone disruption, reproductive problems, asthma, and developmental issues, particularly in children. 3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): PVC is a widely used plastic known for its durability and versatility. Its production and disposal can release toxic chemicals such as dioxins, phthalates, and vinyl chloride into the environment. Dioxins are highly toxic and can cause cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders, and immune system damage in humans and animals. 4. Styrene: Styrene is a chemical compound used in the production of polystyrene plastics, which are commonly used in food packaging, disposable cups, and foam insulation. Styrene exposure has been associated with respiratory issues, neurological effects, and carcinogenicity in humans. These are just a few examples of the toxins present in plastics and their potentially harmful effects on living things. This is the final part of our impact series, featuring our (re)Learning Program + Storytelling! ??Through our (re)Learning Program, we take participants on a journey to discover where plastic pollution comes from, how it enters the environment, and its impact on nature and people. Utilizing storytelling and hands-on experiences, SCH emphasizes the importance of our responsibility to mālama ‘āina (to care for the land), empowering people to become stewards of the land and ocean. This year alone 6,571 students were reached through 208 events hosted by our (re)Learning program, and we had the chance to connect with 7 million people throughout the world to share our mission of inspiring communities to care for coastlines! ??
