“In 1974, my objective was to eradicate whaling, and I hope to do that before I die.” Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd, is currently facing possible extradition to Japan, where he could be sentenced to 15 years in prison. He is currently being held in detention in Greenland. In an interview, he said that his prison cell feels almost like being on the deck of his ship. He referred to it as the best prison cell he's ever been in. Because he can watch whales and icebergs pass by his window. He was arrested for causing damage to one of Japan's whaling ships in the Antarctic in 2010. He was detained last July, and tomorrow a decision will be made on whether to extend his custody in Greenland. Why does it have to come down to this? Watson says that in his fight, he doesn't use violence. He's only trying to protect our planet. Shouldn't everyone be doing that? I'm posting this not only to raise awareness about the arrest and potential imprisonment, but also to highlight Watson as a hero for marine conservation. Whales are extremely important for the planet, and they must be protected. They're magnificent creatures—my personal favourite—but more importantly, they play a huge role in combating climate change.
