A water resource agency serving the Susquehanna River Watershed
关于我们
The Susquehanna River Basin Commission is an agency with a mission - management of the water resources of the basin under comprehensive watershed management and planning principles. As a federal-interstate compact commission, its focus is defined by the natural boundaries of the river basin rather than the political boundaries of the member states. As such, the SRBC serves as a forum to provide coordinated management, promote communication among the members, and resolve water resource issues and controversies within the basin.

Make this Friday's lunch break more interesting!! Follow the link below to sign-up and learn about this cool science... ?? ?? ??
Leading the Way with eDNA! In the same way police use DNA to identify individuals in a crime, Susquehanna River Basin Commission scientists are using eDNA (environmental DNA) to track our own “bad guys” – invasive fish species that may be harmful to native wildlife. SRBC Aquatic Biologist Luanne Steffy will explain the methods, gear and best practices that her team is using as they lead the way with this valuable monitoring technique. Registration is required to attend the free, virtual program. Register Here: https://lnkd.in/dS89UVhT

This week SRBC's Aquatic Ecologist Luanne Steffy and Environmental Scientist/Database Analyst Dawn Hintz showed off their important water quality work at the National Monitoring Conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin! Luanne presented on biological assemblages and increasing stream temperature trends, while Dawn displayed a posted on water quality monitoring data from a small agricultural watershed. Both presented data from our Continuous Instream Monitoring system - one of the largest basin-specific, real-time water quality monitoring programs in the nation! SRBC staff taught two lab "field trips" for Harrisburg University of Science and Technology's Principles of Hydrogeology course recently. One field trip was to the Billmeyer Quarry near Bainbridge, PA where the students learned how we use the quarry's water storage to mitigate the consumptive use of water during times of drought! They also learned about the local geology, took depth to water well measurements, and collected water quality samples. Very cool to work with future environmental scientists! Our own Aaron Henning (Fisheries Biologist) is the American Fisheries Society PA Chapter President this year! He's attending (and helped to plan) the joint meeting of PA, OH and WV chapters at Oglebay Resort this week. Graham Zechman, a grad student at Commonwealth University-Mansfield, who is working on a Tioga Reservoir nutrient monitoring project with co-author Luanne Steffy (SRBC Aquatic Ecologist hiding behind the camera) presented their work! Thanks for representing guys!

Fish tank party! Music on! Watching a fish tank in real-time can make the critters look slow and laid-back... but put out an overnight camera and these busy aquatic friends put on quite the show! Even our American Eel "Sh-EEL-la" popped her head out of the rocks to say hi :) Great footage/editing from our Monitoring & Protection Manager Jamie Shallenberger
