As part of the continuing series celebrating the 25th anniversary of our Nashville office, we look back at the groundbreaking of the Y-12 National Security Complex Modernization Project. In 2004, we embarked on a journey to modernize their facilities. Completed in 2006, this $154 million project added over 600,000 square feet of office and lab space, replacing 40 aging structures and saving $100 million in maintenance costs over 25 years. Construction began in early 2005, leading to the creation of two major new facilities. The Public Interface Facility, spanning 150,000 square feet, became the campus' front door, showcasing a visitor center, auditorium, demonstration lab, and office support. Meanwhile, the Production Support Facility, at 450,000 square feet, was organized into three wings with shared core elements, forming a protected courtyard and utilizing natural daylight to enhance the interior spaces. This project required meticulous coordination with DOE/NNSA/CNS and met stringent Q-Clearance security requirements. Despite the fast-track schedule and multiple package delivery, the project beat the established timeline, with no liquidated damages assessed. The modernization project truly energized their campus, setting a new standard for efficiency, innovation, and sustainability – achieving LEED Certification.
