??Excited to share that I participated in RTI International ‘s Just Science podcast recently where I highlighted Restore NYC ‘s Economic Empowerment Program! ??? Joined by inspiring partners and leaders in this field, Laura Hackney and Tiffany McGee, we engaged in an important dialogue about supporting survivors on their career journeys! Together, we explored how our collective efforts can create lasting change and emphasized the need for organizations to adopt long-term strategies in their approach. I invite you to listen to this episode and the others shared. These are necessary conversations that we must continue to have in this work! ?? https://lnkd.in/e4gZSV3S

关于我们
Survivor Ventures, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing resources and support to survivors of human trafficking in Hampton Roads. Human trafficking is modern day slavery and Virginia ranks 15th in the US for this crime. Each quarter there is an average of 10-20 confirmed victims of human trafficking identified right here in Hampton Roads. We all have a responsibility and a part to play in helping these survivors become contributing members of our society. In Hampton Roads, survivors are often jailed for their role as victim in the trafficking situation. Upon release they have nowhere to go. Without safe shelter, survivors are unable to sustain employment, cycling through stages of homelessness, victimization, addiction and jail, eventually ending in death. The average lifespan for a survivor upon initial victimization is seven years due to the amount of physical, emotional and mental trauma waged upon them each night. Survivor Ventures believes economic empowerment is key to breaking this cycle. Barriers to employment and safe shelter result in many survivors returning to the trafficking situation where at least they have food and a roof over their head. Survivor Ventures partners with small business owners to create unique employment opportunities. Partners are carefully vetted and selected based on a criteria developed to ensure a trauma-informed environment. This program involves on-site case management and intensive community treatment. Survivor Ventures employment program participants can obtain additional training in business and retail operations, equipping them to open their own business or store. Through this program participants create a vetted business plan and are connected to local entrepreneurial resources to gain access to co-working spaces, business grants and loans.

At Survivor Ventures we believe that a long-term transitional housing program, accompanied by intensive case management, #mentalhealth support and economic empowerment services can give a survivor a new start, and an opportunity to change the trajectory of their life’s story. Donate today to support a survivor with mental health and therapeutic modality access. https://lnkd.in/d_Hg8Aq

Established in 2018, Survivor Ventures emerged out of a pursuit to fill the enormous gap in economic opportunity for survivors of human trafficking. In combination with #mentalhealth services and therapies, we believe economic empowerment is the key to releasing survivors from "the life" and that a trauma-informed approach to gainful employment may be the most critical service required to reduce recidivism rates, particularly for a population who only know "work" as a painful and traumatic experience. If you are able to support us and our mission on this #givelocal757 giving day, donations can be made through our GivingLocal757 online profile (link in bio) or visit: https://lnkd.in/d_Hg8Aq

Such an inspiration to all of survivors!
Daily Mail article highlighting the story of Olivia, a trafficking survivor and a pioneer of criminal record relief in Virginia. She helped get the vacatur law passed and was the first client of the Center for Global Justice Clinic- and first person to have her record (partly) cleared under the new law. It’s an honor to have represented Olivia and now get to work alongside her on these cases. Unfortunately, the relief is very limited under the current law. Only misdemeanors can be vacated in Virginia. Yet, as you will read, Olivia and many other victims are forced to commit an array of crimes. And the criminal record follows her long after her trafficker is convicted and imprisoned. I’m happy to see proposed federal legislation addressing this issue and other states establish broad relief. But Virginia needs to catch up!

We are honored to be the recipients of $20,000 from the International Academy of Trial Lawyers that primarily support our Survivors to Entrepreneurs (S2E) program. Between 75-90 survivors will use our new legal advocacy services in partnership with Surviving Change Foundation, crucial in light of Virginia’s recent vacatur legislation for trafficking survivors! With IATL's support in 2023, we fortified our S2E services in Virginia and Delaware, serving 50 survivors, and expanded into Washington DC, replicating our successful Hampton Roads model. IATL’s Anti-Trafficking Coalition serves as a resource center to empower and equip Fellows and their families with tools to combat human trafficking through raising awareness, education, advocacy for policy change, litigation to assist victims and reduce demand, and other actions to support victims and survivors.
