At Survive First, we believe in open conversations about the challenges first responders face. It’s ok to acknowledge the weight of the job. It’s ok to ask for help. And it’s critical to have the tools and support to navigate the tough moments. You don’t have to carry it all alone. Remember… It’s ok to feel. It’s ok to heal. #survivefirst #firstresponders #mentalhealthawareness #weseeyou

Justin Ziegler is at it again! St. Cloud Police Officer Justin Ziegler is once again pushing his limits to raise awareness for mental health in the first responder community. In 2023, he ran over 200 miles across the state of Florida in support of first responder mental health. Today, he takes on another 200-mile ultramarathon, spreading this important message once more. We are honored to have Justin as one of our guest speakers at the 3rd Annual ‘A Night with the Stars’ First Responder Gala on April 12, where he’ll share his journey and the importance of mental health advocacy. Check out this FOX 35 feature on Justin’s incredible efforts! #FirstResponderMentalHealth #StrongerTogether #SurviveFirst #weseeyou #STRONG https://lnkd.in/e-RZEKyM

First responders are always taking care of others, but how often do you check in with yourself? A quick mental health check-in can help you stay grounded and resilient. Ask yourself: - How am I feeling emotionally today? - Am I getting enough rest and quality sleep? - Have I nourished my body with food and hydration? - Have I moved my body or engaged in physical activity? - Have I connected with someone I trust or asked for support if needed? - What is one thing I can do right now to take care of myself? Your well-being matters. Take a moment, check in, and make time for self-care. #mentalhealthawareness #weseeyou #MentalHealthCheckIn #FirstResponderWellness #SurviveFirst

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a key role in mood regulation, sleep, and overall well-being. For first responders, maintaining healthy serotonin levels is important for managing stress, staying focused, and improving resilience in high-pressure situations. Here are five natural and simple ways to boost serotonin levels on a daily basis. 1. Exercise Regularly – Physical activity, especially aerobic exercises like running, cycling, and swimming, can increase serotonin production and improve mood. Even a brisk walk outdoors can help. 2. Get Sunlight Exposure – Sunlight boosts serotonin levels by triggering the production of vitamin D, which is linked to serotonin synthesis. Try to get at least 15-30 minutes of sunlight daily…but remember to wear your sunblock! 3. Eat Serotonin-Boosting Foods – Foods rich in tryptophan, an amino acid that helps produce serotonin, include eggs, turkey, salmon, nuts, seeds, and dairy products. Pairing these with healthy carbohydrates can enhance absorption. 4. Practice Mindfulness and Meditation – Activities like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can reduce stress and increase serotonin levels by promoting relaxation and positive thinking. 5. Prioritize Social Connections – Engaging in meaningful conversations, spending time with loved ones, and practicing gratitude can stimulate serotonin production and enhance overall happiness. By incorporating these simple strategies into your daily routine, you can support your mental and physical well-being, allowing you to perform at your best both on and off the job. #survivefirst #firstresponders #mentalhealth #weseeyou #MentalHealthAwareness

The Power of Social Connection: How Oxytocin Impacts the Brain Human connection isn’t just good for the soul - it’s good for the brain too. When we spend time with friends, family, or supportive communities, our brain releases oxytocin, often called the "bonding hormone." This powerful neurochemical enhances feelings of trust, connection, and emotional well-being. On the flip side, isolation and loneliness can lead to low oxytocin levels, contributing to stress, anxiety, and even depression. That’s why prioritizing social connection is essential for mental health. Whether it’s grabbing coffee with a friend, joining a fitness group, or simply checking in with a loved one, these moments boost oxytocin and remind us we’re not alone. Here are six way to boost your oxytocin through social connection: Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones – Whether it’s a deep conversation or just sharing a cup of coffee and chatting, being present with friends and family strengthens bonds and increases oxytocin. Share a Laugh – Humor is a powerful stress reliever. Joking around with colleagues or friends boosts oxytocin and reinforces camaraderie...but be careful of that gallows humor. Engage in Group Activities – Join a fitness class, a community event, or a team...shared experiences create a sense of belonging and boost oxytocin levels. Express Gratitude – Telling someone you appreciate them or writing a heartfelt note strengthens relationships and stimulates oxytocin in both the giver and the receiver. Share a Phone Call - A quick call to check in with a friend, family member, or fellow responder reminds both of you that you’re not alone, strengthening social bonds. Lend a Helping Hand - Acts of kindness, like volunteering or simply being there for a friend in need, naturally increase oxytocin and create a stronger sense of community. Take time today to nurture your connections - you’ll feel the difference! #survivefirst #firstresponders #mentalhealthawareness #socialconnection #weseeyou

Sleep is not a luxury - it’s a necessity, especially for first responders who face high-stress situations daily. Lack of sleep can impact decision-making, reaction time, and overall well-being. Prioritizing quality rest is essential for both mental and physical resilience. Here are three ways to improve sleep habits: 1. Establish a Pre-Sleep Routine: Wind down before bed with relaxing activities like reading or deep breathing, and avoid screens to promote better rest. 2. Optimize Your Sleep Environment: Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet with blackout curtains or white noise to improve sleep quality. 3. Aim for 7–9 Hours of Sleep: Prioritize getting enough rest, even if it means taking naps after long shifts, to support recovery and performance. Taking care of yourself starts with quality sleep. Rest well, stay strong, and be ready for whatever comes next. #survivefirst #bettersleep #mentalhealthawareness #firstresponders #weseeyou
