Yesterday, Surrey received a call from officer CJ Burdsall of the Easttown Township Police Department.?He was roadside on Route 252 with Joseph and Kathy B., a couple in their 70s, whose van had broken down. The reason for the call? Joseph is a quadriplegic, and they had no way to get home. Office Burdsall initially called Chesco Connect, but the couple lives in Springfield in Delaware County which is outside of Chesco Connect’s service area. So, the county referred Burdsall to Surrey. Immediately Surrey’s transportation director began adjusting the Surrey drivers’ schedules and making sure that one of Surrey’s wheelchair accessible vans, acquired through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), was available. Less than 30 minutes later, Surrey driver, Frank Bourkue, headed over to meet the couple and Officer Burdsall. “I didn’t know what to do, we had to get home somehow. Officer Burdsall stayed with us to make sure we were safe and then Frank from Surrey took us home to Springfield,” said Kathy. “Both men were so kind and went above and beyond to help.” #community #easttowntownship #Chestercountypa
