?Empowering Executives, Leaders, and High-Performing Teams to Achieve Peak Performance, Drive Impact, and Lead with Purpose ?? Transforming Leaders, Elevating Teams.
?? Reflecting on ENS Sears at the CONN here 11 years ago (CRAZY!) on USS KIDD, DDG-100... with unforgettable leadership from all levels ?? . A few months before meeting my ship on deployment I took this commissioning oath: "I, _____ , having been appointed an officer in the?_____ (Military Branch)?of the United States, as indicated above in the grade of _____ do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservations or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter; So help me God." While I still didn't have much depth of knowledge of what this would mean at that moment, I can say I still stand by it now even as a Reservist, with even greater conviction. What I really didn't understand at the time was how the last sentence would be emphasized throughout my career and life; "So help me God". I didn't fully realize at the time that this implied that there was a limitation to me, that only God could help with. As a conning officer on the bridge, you are responsible for relaying orders to the helmsman and leehelmsman to steer the ship on a fixed course as verified through your magnetic compass. Of course in this era, we have so many redundancies to find our path, and steer towards the intended direction. If all those redundancies were to fail, the last thing we had was our eyeballs. Through years of trying to be a good leader in my own wisdom and strength alone, based only on the teachings of great men and women, I realized it still wasn't enough... And I made A LOT of mistakes along the way. Overtime, I learned that my true compass and source of direction needed to be God. It is Him that I truly set as my foundation, there when all "other things" fail, but it's also Him who fuels the accuracy of any thing I'd use, the source still being founded in Him. The only One who knows beginning from the end. ?? In these crazy dynamic times, I really am curious as to what default people, especially leaders, find themselves leaning on? What foundation do your people see when your own strength and wisdom run out, as you acknowledge your humanity? Is it effective? If so, how do you know? #reflectivemonday #sohelpmeGod #leadership #Navy #warships
