As we close out our celebration of Black History Month, we reflect on Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston's groundbreaking contributions to healthcare that have transformed lives worldwide, particularly for those living with sickle cell disease. Inspired by a pivotal experience during her medical internship, she dedicated her career to researching this life-altering condition. Her landmark 1986 study demonstrated the importance of newborn screening and the lifesaving use of penicillin to prevent fatal infections in children with sickle cell disease, leading to a nationwide screening program. As the first Black woman to lead the Health Resources and Services Administration's Bureau of Primary Health Care and the second to achieve the rank of rear admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Gaston shattered barriers while improving healthcare access and outcomes. Today we honor Dr. Daniel Hale Williams who was a true pioneer in medicine and a champion for health equity. He was one of the first physicians to successfully perform open heart surgery, a groundbreaking achievement. In 1891, he founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first Black-owned and non-segregated hospital in the United States, creating opportunities for Black healthcare professionals and patients alike. He also made history as the first Black member of the American College of Surgeons.
