Exciting Ocean Friendly Garden Transformation in Los Angeles’s Palms Neighborhood! ???? Surfrider's Los Angeles chapter collaborated with the Los Angeles Neighborhood Council Sustainability Alliance to create a new Ocean Friendly Garden. The weekend-long project transformed an ornamental grass lawn into a functional, sustainable landscape that supports climate resilience and protects clean water. Here are some of the incredible impacts from the project: ??237 volunteers engaged? ??700+ volunteer hours? ??215 native plants & trees planted? ??1,442 square feet of turf grass removed ??1,000 square feet of roof area runoff diverted into raingarden? ??7,440 gallons of runoff prevented per year! We are so excited to watch this #OceanFriendlyGarden grow, and we hope it inspires others in the neighborhood to take action! The current scene in Rincón, Puerto Rico, is intense as hundreds rally against constructing an ill-conceived paved bike along two miles of coastline, from Dome’s Beach to Rincón Public Beach. The proposed path runs along the beach of Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, a federally registered, community-created marine protected area and one of Surfrider’s first ocean protection victories, established nearly 20 years ago. The reserve protects habitat for hawksbill turtles, elkhorn coral, and an abundance of other marine wildlife and is home to one of the most iconic surf breaks in Puerto Rico. The path also runs through Bosque Comunitario La Armonía, a community-led reforestation project that plays a key role in controlling erosion, managing stormwater, and capturing carbon. Surfrider, coalition partners, and the local community strongly oppose this project as planned and demand that construction immediately stop so plans can be modified to eliminate the harmful impacts on these precious natural areas. The solution is straightforward: work with, instead of against, the local community to design a coastal bike path that truly meets their needs and protects their resources.
