It’s NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH! This month we’re highlighting Native American Individuals who have made an impact in the world of science & technology. Fred Begay (1932-2013), a member of the Navajo tribe, joined the physics staff at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1971 where he remained until his retirement. During his time there, he researched thermonuclear fusion to find alternative energy sources using lasers, electrons, and high energy ion beams to heat different plasmas. Prior to his time at Los Alamos, he joined a NASA-funded research team studying the origin of high-energy gamma rays and solar neutrons while working on his doctorate in nuclear physics. After his retirement from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Fred served as president of the Seaborg Hall of Science where he provided public services to the Native American communities for science and technology. He’s received many awards for his research including a Lifetime Achievement from the National Science Foundation, and a Distinguished Scientist award from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science. Additionally, his life has been documented in a number of films and was featured in National Geographic Magazine as one of many Notable Twentieth Century Scientists.
