#ICYMI, last night 244 midshipmen selected their first ships during the United States Naval Academy Ship Selection Night. Congratulations to these future #warfighters who will project peace through strength, and will lead the US Navy with honor, courage and commitment.?U.S. Naval Surface Force My passion for the Navy stems from being a Surface Warfare Officer because I learned very early on that SWOs get responsibility fast. SWOs are expected to be tactical experts while we're leading a division of Sailors, studying for qualifications, and learning the ropes from Department Heads and Chief Petty Officers. Less than a year from now, these Midshipmen will be doing just that. They will be standing watch on the bridge, navigating our Cruisers, Destroyers, Littoral Combat Ships, and Amphibious Assault Ships over the horizon. These Midshipmen will be participating in multinational exercises with our Allies and partners, heading over to foreign shores, and standing watch in combat. These Midshipmen will be leading teams that deter our adversaries every single day, and when necessary, they will be launching Tomahawks and Standard Missiles to defend our national security interests and defend our way of life.

The opening of the full bridge simulator in Yokosuka makes good on a promise we made to FITZGERALD and JOHN S MCCAIN many years ago. This facilty is amazing and has already been booked by the ships on the waterfront at more than 95% capacity through September. This is well over the time required by the Navy. The ships are eager to max out all the training they can get, and we haven’t even scratched the surface of this facility’s capabilities.

What a great time at the Surface Navy Association (SNA) National Symposium at the Hyatt Crystal City 14-16 January 2025. An impressive list of speakers really brought their “A” game to share with us: SecNav Del Toro, CNO ADM Lisa Franchetti, VCNO ADM Jim Kilby, DCOM CENTCOM VADM Brad Cooper, SWO Boss VADM Brendan McLane and CNSL RADM Joe Cahill, USNA Superintendent VADM Yvette Davids, NAVSEA VADM Downey, Director of Surface Warfare RADM Bill Daly,; Submarine Admirals: ADM Caudle (Fleet Forcess Command) and NAVEUR/NAVAF ADM Munsch, Aviation Admirals: Air Boss VADM Dan “Undra” Cheever, CNAL RADM Doug “V8” Verissimo, DCOM FFC VADM John “Gumby” Gumbleton, ESG 3 RDML“Sarge” Peck, Pers 41, CO SWOS (now SWSC). Biggest surprise was when SecNav Del Toro honored former SecNav, Medal of Honor Recipient, and former POW named ships after them in his speech: USS Ray Maybus (DDG 147), USS Kyle Carpenter (DDG 148), and USS Everett Alvarez (FFG 68). USS Robert R Ingram (DDG 149) also announced. The list of speakers, contributors and awardees just kept going on and on…what a great 3 days! VADM Brad Cooper hit a Grand Slam with the culminating event as our guest speaker at the banquet and gave a riveting first hand account of tactical action in the Red Sea by some of our surface forces! Other highlights: CO panel, Big USCG uptick in attendance and participation in panels, Fleet Master Chief and Enlisted Training panels, “Ask the Chief”, JO and Midn panels, as well as largely attended Navy, USCG Officer and Enlisted Woman’s Warriors panel for active duty/retired Navy/USCG Officers/Enlisted…which gets bigger every year! It was an amazing and fun filled 3 days of getting updates, seeing friends and shipmates, seeing what industry is building and working on and also celebrating Surface warfare and our most powerful weapon…OUR PEOPLE. I can’t wait for USNA Ship Selection Night on February 6th…another night of energy and inspiration!
