Lessons from an All-American So proud of my daughter Savannah, who finished 18th in the nation, earning All-American honors while playing a major role in her team winning the National Championship at the 2023 USATF Jr. Olympics National Championships in Louisville last weekend. Here are the three things she did to get there: 1)???Don’t Focus on the Past: Last year, she was a shoe in to qualify for nationals, but when we got to regionals, she didn’t run. For whatever reason, she was “sick”, not comfortable. It just didn’t happen. This year, she left that where it belongs, behind her in the past. 2)???Set Stretch Goals: Coming into the 2023 season, she wasn’t even on the radar for All American. But she set a stretch goal. Get to Nationals and get on the podium. Her stretch goal was top ten. She didn’t make it, but on falling short, it still resulted in 18th in the nation, a podium spot, and All-American honors. Sometimes hitting a goal just means you didn’t set it high enough! 3)???Surround Yourself With People That Can Help You Get There: She knew she needed to get on a bigger team, with more coaches and more teammates. Her previous team was good but too small, and couldn't qualify for Nationals as a team. She came to us and asked us if she could move to another team. This changed our practice commute from 10 minutes round trip to an hour round trip. Her and her sister lobbied us with logic and reasoning that we couldn't deny. These are three basic principles to success that apply to just about everything we do. And the great thing about it is that it’s never too late to apply them in any facet of your life. Whether you are looking for a new career, in your personal relationships, or if you’re a high performing athlete. These are foundational. There’s a reason why you often see them quoted in success stories; it’s because they work. Congrats Savannah, you earned it!
