Agricultural workers of all kinds —including seasonal workers on H-2A visas — deserve basic workplace protections. Today, we've filed an amicus brief on behalf of local and national worker advocacy organizations including United Farm Workers Of America, UFW Foundation, Farmworker Justice, and Sur Legal Collaborative on why a new federal rule must be allowed to take effect. We write that "shredding these vital provisions...will accomplish nothing except to harm U.S. workers and workers on H-2A visas alike." 关于我们
Sur Legal Collaborative (SUR) is an immigrant and worker rights non-profit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia. Sur provides education and legal support to communities, grassroots groups, and legal advocates to promote an end to (1) labor abuses against workers; (2) ICE detention and illegal deportations; and (3) the prison industrial complex and the police state. Founded by attorneys with expertise in immigration, appellate, and labor law, Sur uses legal tools to support movements and campaigns led by immigrants and workers. Immigrants in Georgia face some of the harshest immigration policies, toughest immigration courts, and worst detention centers in the country. Furthermore, immigrants are among the most vulnerable workers in the country, often working in hazardous industries run by unethical employers. Covid has exacerbated and exposed many of these issues, but federal oversight has declined. Though imperfect, labor laws can empower immigrant and low-income workers to overcome the culture of fear and gain access to the rights and justice to which they are entitled. The ultimate goal of Sur’s work is to democratize legal knowledge so that immigrant and working-class communities are empowered with the resources necessary to advocate for their rights and continue to lead us in the struggle for a more just society.

Thank you GAPABA Law Foundation for your generosity! Your support helps makes our work supporting immigrant and AAPI workers and their communities possible. We are so grateful to be honored alongside such an incredible list of recipients!
GAPABA Law Foundation Donor Appreciation Reception PHOTO ALBUM: https://lnkd.in/ejZMNa4C On Wed, Oct. 16, 2024, the GAPABA Law Foundation held our Inaugural #Donor #Appreciation #Reception at Norfolk Southern's headquarters to thank the generosity of our supporters. The evening was also an occasion to recognize our eight non-profit grant recipients, as well as the five law students who received the GLF Hemanth Digumarthi Public Interest Scholarships. Nearly 50 gathered , informally noshing on pizza and beer, while celebrating the tremendous work of Georgia's non-profit organizations whose work benefits our #AAPI and immigrant communities. We also listened to several of the law students who shared how they spent their summer internships. Many of the grant recipients and scholars found tremendous fellowship and affinity with one another, sparking and incubating conversations for future collaborative work. In the words of Judge Alvin T. Wong (unfortunately able to join the evening): "Work Hard. Do Good. Give More!" Our work would not be possible without the generosity of our Donors: The Digumarthi & Harrykissoon Harrykissoon Families, Southern Company Gas Foundation, Georgia Power Company Foundation, the John & Rosemary Brown Foundation, the UPS Foundation, Theresa Wynn Roseborough, and so many other individual donors. In a new Civil Eats article, we provide some of our insight on successes and challenges facing labor protections for immigrant food workers. Reporting abusive or dangerous workplaces is a right that too many are threatened or silenced out of. Some of the most unscrupulous employers use immigration status as a weapon to avoid accountability for breaking labor law—all while keeping workers at risk. We share how we’re supporting workers’ rights to speak up when something is wrong and prevent future tragedies. #workersrights #laborrights #immigration #immigrants #worker #safety #deferredaction #laborlaw #immigrationlaw UFW Foundation National Immigration Law Center
