Huge congratulations to Tara Dower for making history as the fastest person ever to complete the Appalachian Trail! The 31-year-old from Virginia tackled the 2,168-mile (3,489 km) trail in an incredible 40 days, 18 hours, and 5 minutes—a journey that typically takes hikers five to seven months. To break the record, Tara covered an average of 54 miles a day on rugged, challenging terrain that spans 14 states and includes a total elevation gain of 465,000 feet. She started each day at 3:30 a.m., running and hiking for around 17 hours with brief stops for meals and even 90-second "dirt naps." In addition to setting this incredible record, Tara used her journey to raise funds for Girls on the Run, hoping to inspire girls and women to aim high and pursue their goals. “I hope more women get out there,” she said. “It’s not about beating men, it’s about finding our true potential.
