SunTrain is transforming how energy moves with their innovative utility-scale battery energy storage system mounted on railcars. This groundbreaking technology enables surplus power—like energy from solar farms—to be transported via train to markets that need it most. Chris Smith, SunTrain’s President, CTO, and Founder, showcased their working prototype railcar and shared an exciting vision for the future of energy transport by rail. We have some exciting updates to share with you!? We will shortly be announcing our first grid-scale pilot project and, in response to continuing requests, are creating an opportunity for individuals to directly invest in SunTrain! As you may know, SunTrain has already been demonstrated at the proof-of-concept scale. Our custom-built 750 KWh train car has been charged with solar energy at SunTrain's San Francisco testbed and transported over 6,500 miles on the Union Pacific network for discharge locations around California. To advance to commercialization, SunTrain will soon be announcing a partnership with a major utility and a Department of Energy national laboratory to develop a 20-railcar, 384 MWh grid-connected pilot project that will utilize the existing rail and power infrastructure at two former coal-fired power plants. It will capture frequently curtailed renewable wind and solar energy at one site and transport it about 125 miles to the other, where it will be discharged to the grid during peak hours to reduce gas peaker plant emissions at the site. The results of this grid-connected pilot would remove the last major hurdles slowing the development of full-scale 1.9 GWh, 100-car systems. It will capture critical design and operational data, help develop engineering component and system designs, and define the operational characteristics required by grid planners for the mass deployment and adoption of SunTrains.? Details of the public announcement of the pilot project are being finalized, but it is expected to occur in early December. In parallel, to provide an avenue for individual investors to participate in SunTrain, we will be launching an equity crowdfunding campaign on the Republic platform.? I can't stop thinking about SunTrain Co and their innovative approach to overcoming one of the biggest hurdles in the renewable energy sector: building electricity transmission infrastructure. This bottleneck is a major roadblock for the rollout of renewables in the USA. According to a recent Economist article there's a Terrawatt of Solar power capability waiting on transmission lines being built to somewhere it's needed. SunTrain has a bold solution: using large freight trains, essentially massive batteries on wheels, to transport energy from sun-soaked or wind-swept areas with limited transmission capacity to energy-hungry regions. Just one of these 100-car trains could carry an incredible 3 GWh of energy. It sounds crazy but when you consider that right now there are multiple trains of the same scale moving coal to power stations the idea begins to make a lot of sense. It's exciting to see alternative thinking in pursuit of net zero .... and i hope those trains are electric ! https://lnkd.in/guTArFfP

We are thrilled to be featured in The Economist's latest essay on the exponential growth and future of solar energy! Here's a sneak peek into how SunTrain is contributing to the shift to solar: “The company plans to use solar farms in places that have little to recommend them other than a railway line nearby as filling stations at which to charge heavy but cheap batteries built into goods wagons. A 100-car train similar to the ones that currently carry coal east from Wisconsin could deliver 3 gigawatt-hours to users.
