Did you know when George Herman Ruth aka “The Great Bambino” was seven he was placed into an orphanage/reform school in Baltimore? The leaders of the school encouraged George’s baseball talent ⚾ which led to him being spotted by a talent scout when he was 19. He played for the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. He went on to hit 714 career home runs, and chalked up 2,214 RBI’s during his 22 year career. At Sunnybrook, we believe education is power and we work to empower our residents with the tools and knowledge to not only survive but to thrive. In 2023, our youth had over 1,180 plus hours of transitional programming and an 83% employment rate. Additionally, Sunnybrook residents are 3X more likely to find employment than other foster kids in Mississippi and 5X more likely to receive financial training. These numbers matter, especially when you look at national statistics of kids exiting foster care. Each year it is estimated that 20,000 youth exit the foster care system. National statistics say 25% of those youth are immediately homeless, less than 3% obtain a degree and 70% remain unemployed. Sunnybrook Children’s Home, our driver’s ed program and the new $2.1 million grant from the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services to provide driver’s education to foster kids statewide was featured in a recent article from the Mississippi Free Press 📸: Mississippi Free Press Check out the article: https://lnkd.in/eVa3C_Yd This is the first pilot program in the state to offer a driver’s education program to youth in foster care for free! The grant provides youth aged 15 and older with a driver’s ed course and six hours of practice driving time. They also receive help preparing for their written exam. Did you know, many kids in foster care don’t obtain their learner’s permit or driver’s license due to frequent moves, lack of access to a car to practice driving, financial constraints and lack of insurance? But without the ability to drive, many struggle with transportation, including getting to and from jobs, school and healthcare once they exit the foster care system. At Sunnybrook, we recognized that the need was great and developed a program to help our residents overcome this barrier. Compared to other foster teens nationally, Sunnybrook residents are 15X more likely to receive their driver’s license and 88% have obtained their license or permit. Now, thanks to a contract by the Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services, Sunnybrook and local driver’s ed providers will offer driver’s ed courses to foster youth aged 15 and older statewide. #Sunnybrook #Mississippi #faithandfostercare #fostercare #driversed #transitionalyouth #faith

While many POUNCE Solutions clients are based in Northern Virginia, we also have a strong presence on the Gulf Coast, thanks to my partner and brother Christopher Herting. One of our Day 1 clients is Sunnybrook Children's Home, Inc., which serves foster youth in Mississippi who are aging out of the foster care system. What started as a children’s home more than 60 years ago, serving youth from birth through age 18, has narrowed its focus in recent years to focus on some of the most vulnerable members of their community: transitional age youth. The foster care system is imperfect, and the prospects for success coming out of it can be pretty grim. Most graduates of the foster care system leave the state’s care without a high school diploma, without any career skills, minimal life skills, no car, no home, and nobody vouching for their success. It’s not surprising that many will end up in jail, addicted to drugs, pregnant, and/or homeless within weeks or months. For those in Mississippi, Sunnybrook is the first organization to specialize in their success, and is a last hope for many to turn things around. With a small population and high staff-to-resident ratio, Sunnybrook gives them a stable environment and invests immense resources in their success. While no one can erase the trauma these kids and young adults have faced in life before arriving, Sunnybrook has an impressive track record for helping them live fulfilling lives. Exciting things are on the way for Sunnybrook, including a new website in the new year, and we couldn’t be happier to support their success 🚀
