Since 1957, the Sumter Development Board with support from the County and City of Sumter, has been the lead organization for job development and growth in the Sumter Community. Originally founded by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly, the Sumter Development Board has taken on many forms and challenges throughout the years. The Development Board began operating independently in the mid-1990s as the lead economic development organization in the Sumter Community. The Development Board's mission is to increase per capita income by creating jobs and luring capital investment to our community. Today, Sumter Economic Development’s team is flourishing with Partners such as the Sumter Smarter Growth Initiative (SSGI) and TheLINK Alliance, assisting in efforts to bolster industrial recruitment and expansion, new job creation, and community progress.

April 1st?was designated as National One Cent Day in the year 1787 when the US introduced its first official currency, the “Fugio” cent. Over the years, the term “penny” was coined (no pun intended!), and the US Mint began producing copper-composed coins, which are now made primarily of zinc. ? In today’s time, the penny may seem like a small thing, both in value and size. However, the penny has shown how mighty it can be, especially in Sumter. These little Lincolns have fostered huge changes and advancements within our community, and it is important that the penny gets recognition today and everyday.

Speaker Smith was awarded and recognized because of his work to prioritize economic development. His accomplishments as Speaker in just two short years include passing legislation to streamline workforce development, funding SCWINS, funding for industrial site readiness, advancing the military workforce, and his work on energy capacity.
