What’s the point of high school? At Summit, it’s more than a diploma. Here, teachers are redefining success by focusing on the long-term well-being of students. We’re thrilled to share more from Summit Tahoma teacher and experienced San Jose educator, Laura Ochoa. Ms. Ochoa’s EdSource op-ed shares how Summit’s mentoring program has empowered her to authentically support her students to become fulfilled adults. Amazing work, Ms. Ochoa! ??? #Education #TeacherSuccess #StudentSuccess #BestK12Schools #Teaching #CharterSchools

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us last week for an inspiring evening with Dr. David Yeager at Summit Public Schools in Redwood City. A big thank you to Dr. Yeager, Diane Tavenner, and the Silicon Schools Fund for making this event possible. Dr. Yeager shared invaluable insights on cultivating a mentor mindset and motivating young people, all found in his upcoming book:"10-25: The Science of Motivating Young People: A Groundbreaking Approach to Leading the Next Generation–And Making Your Own Life Easier." We’re excited to apply this knowledge to enhance outcomes for our young people.

We are excited to announce that the Research-to-Impact Practices are available now! https://lnkd.in/gXNqSuPi Schools across America struggle to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities — especially students from historically underserved backgrounds. Over three years, educators, researchers, and content experts developed evidence-based practices to improve learning experiences, environments, and outcomes for Black and Latinx students with disabilities experiencing poverty. The practices are organized into five collections that summarize relevant research and provide step-by-step instructions, case studies from schools in the network, and templates and implementation tools for educators to use in their classrooms. -Turning the Page to Secondary Literacy: Tested practices for schools to identify gaps and implement interventions for secondary readers? -Opening Doors to Collaboration: Interdisciplinary practices for building collaboration between general and special education teams -Navigating Data for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support: Equity-based practices for using data at the district, school, and classroom levels to accelerate student supports -Igniting Postsecondary Aspirations: Proven school-based practices to empower students to transition into meaningful college, career, and community postsecondary pathways -Anchoring Emotions: One school’s skill-based practices for supporting students with emotional-based disabilities We are grateful for the collaboration and partnership of the NIC. Participating Schools: Summit Public Schools, KIPP Public Schools Northern California, Ednovate Inc, Green Dot Public Schools California, STEM Preparatory Schools, Rocky Mountain Prep, Noble Schools, Collegiate Academies, Mastery Schools, Uncommon Schools. Grateful to have leaders like Dan Effland working to build school culture that collaboratively centers our teachers and the needs of our young people. If you’re interested in how, give this a read.
Systems leader focused on transforming schools to support our young people to access the opportunities they deserve
Excited to share my first foray into writing for the public. Today, The 74 Media published a piece of mine focused on building a culture of collaboration and shared decision making in our schools. The thoughts in it represent years of experience and many of the things I have learned in my time at Summit Public Schools and from the countless mentors I have had in this work. I hope you enjoy! https://lnkd.in/gsgPUF6x

Chief Program Officer @ AI for Education I AI Strategist for Mission-Driven Orgs | Former Teacher and School Leader I Rice MBA
There are few things that make me happier than working with Summit Public Schools students, teachers, and leaders on AI literacy and design thinking to create innovative solutions to complex societal challenges!
Today we’re running our first school-wide “Prompt-a-thon” event at Summit Atlas High School in Seattle. Corey Layne Crouch and I are facilitating a day where students and teachers come together to solve community problems using generative AI, guided by the principles of both design thinking and liberatory design. This methodology prioritizes equity at the heart of design thinking, shifting the relationship between those traditionally holding the reins of design to those impacted by these designs. For our Prompt-a-Thon design thinking provides the framework for coming up with their solutions before using Gen AI to then augment their ideas at each stage in the process. Dan Effland even provided each team with 1-2 GPT-4 Teams accounts. We are also lucky to have Sutton Wunderle from Microsoft Education here as a mentor. The synergy between students and teachers, enhanced with the capabilities of generative AI, has produced some truly inspiring work as they work to tackle problems including: ??? Literacy/reading ????Invasive species in the region ???Affordable housing ???Helping schools move from punitive to restorative practices ???Connecting low income Seattleites with resources ???Building a school gym to support social-emotional learning and mental/physical health The creativity and impact as teams explore diverse applications of AI is really great to see. Summit is a great example of what schools can achieve when they embrace both innovation and equity. If you envision hosting a similar transformative event at your school or district, reach out to us!
