Summer Search believes young people should have the opportunity to fulfill their potential, regardless of their circumstances. Young people across the nation possess unique strengths, resilience, and tremendous potential, yet many face systemic inequities that can limit their potential. As a result, their ability to obtain postsecondary degrees, participate in the workforce, or gain financial stability is often stifled. Since 1990, we have partnered with high schools, community-based organizations, families, and supporters to provide opportunities for high school students from low-income communities to overcome systemic inequities through mentoring and transformative experiences. OUR ALUMNI ARE 3 TIMES MORE LIKELY to graduate with a 4-year degree than their peers and become the kind of leaders our country needs—civic leaders, advocates, industry leaders, teachers, mothers, and fathers. Their collective leadership ripples across the community, future generations, and contributes to a more equitable society.

We were honored to bring the Summer Search community together to celebrate 35 years of achievement in supporting our participants and alumni and to extend our gratitude to our event honorees: Bob Friend (In Memoriam), John Brennan, and Niles Lichtenstein ? In her remarks, Summer Search Alum and Bay Area Board Member, Justice Alford shared: "Going through Summer Search helped me learn how to look up the mountain and visualize how to climb it. When things seem unattainable, I learned that I can pull something out of myself that I may not have known was there. When something is intense and I’m having a hard time navigating it, I know how to climb the mountain.” We are so grateful for the overwhelming support of our incredible Summer Search community. ??Did you know that 1 in 3 young people in the U.S. will grow up without a mentor outside of their family? This gap is?even more pronounced for youth from lower-income households, where only 28% of young adults had a career role model, compared to 80% from households with higher income levels. Summer Search’s program directly addresses this mentorship gap by providing sustained, high-quality mentoring relationships with trained staff mentors to young people who could benefit most from this type of consistent support.
