The Dogwood Room, also known as the Airport 77 Restaurant, was deemed one of the most modern airport restaurants in the country and the most modern in Charlotte. Operated by Mr. and Mrs. Homer Kirkman, it was considered a true experience and social outing where diners could watch planes takeoff and land out of large windows overlooking the runways. The Dogwood Room provided the catering for food service onboard flights and was a hot spot for high profile visitors, serving the likes of Nat King Cole, Jack Dempsey, and John Russell, among others. The Dogwood Room will be featured in our upcoming gallery dedicated to Charlotte, titled “Aviation City.”

In 1924, Clarence O. Kuester, Sr., Business Manager of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, wrote to the Department of the Post Office to inquire about including the city in airmail routes. Between 1924-1929, the Chamber petitioned the Federal Government numerous times advocating for a Charlotte airmail stop. After constructing a landing field and encouraging local businesses to utilize the service, Charlotte welcomed its inaugural airmail flight on April 1, 1930, marking a significant milestone in the city's aviation history.
