KEYNOTE SPEAKER HIGHLIGHT: Nina Gutin, Ph.D. We are pleased to have Dr. Nina Gutin present on "Exploring the Nature of Suicide: How is it Understood, Experienced, Judged and Treated?” In her presentation, Dr. Gutin will explore a wide variety of perspectives about the nature of suicide and how it’s currently understood, experienced, judged and treated. She will enumerate many of the common perspectives and presuppositions around suicide (and directed towards those with suicidal experiences), particularly those coming from psychiatric and mental health professions. She will invite us to consider how these perspectives, assumptions and language shape how we view and relate to those with (or our own) suicidal experiences, how these perspectives often overlook non-psychiatric drivers of suicidal distress, and may perpetuate both distress and stigma for suicidal individuals! She will then speak about the efforts of many, including those with lived experiences of suicide, critical suicidologists and allies, (many within the mental health field) who aim to challenge many of these conventional assumptions, to “widen the lens” through which suicidal experiences are perceived and understood, and improve care and support for those with suicidal experiences. She hopes that this exploration will provoke a rich and fruitful discussion among attendees. Last call for registration as our final remaining spots are filling up quickly! https://lnkd.in/gyHBMNZX

KEYNOTE SPEAKER SPOTLIGHT: Join us for an inspiring conversation with Swil Kanim, an indigenous man, US Army Veteran, classically trained violinist, native storyteller, and trauma survivor from the Lummi Nation. Swil Kanim’s extraordinary journey from facing racism and suffering to becoming a student of honor is deeply rooted in his discovery of the violin in the 4th grade.
