QPR training covers important skills to help anyone save a life. Consider attending this training presented by United Way of West Florida on Monday, Oct 7.
Join us on October 7 at 1:30 pm at the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce and Tourist Information Center for QPR training! QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer. 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. QPR training is designed to teach you how to recognize the warning signs, clues, and suicidal communications of people in trouble, and how to respond to prevent a possible tragedy. QPR is not a form of counseling or treatment but rather it is intended to offer hope through positive action. Gatekeepers are given information that is easy to understand and reinforced by the QPR booklet and card, complete with warning signs, methods to encourage a person to get help, and a list of resources available in your community. Registering is required! Get started at uwwf.org/qpr.

This Suicide Prevention Month we amplify the voices of those with lived suicide experiences, sharing messages they want others to hear. This message is one we have heard loud and clear: Suicide is less about a desire to die... ...and more about a lack of known, available, accessible, effective, and SAFE (i.e. won't lose my job, my kids, etc.) options to help with intense, painful, chronic, or overwhelming concerns. Identifying, acknowledging and addressing root causes of an individual's suicidal ideation can help make paths to healing more helpful. This series will highlight some of these root causes those with lived experiences have shared with us as well as some things they have found helpful in addressing them.

"Let's talk about the rates of suicide among young Black men - they've increased by 25%. Suicide attempts by Black adolescents rose by 73%. It's not if we can do it - it is imperative that we must do it. We have to meet people where they are. What many of our partners are doing in the community is so important." - NAMI CEO Dan Gillison, Jr. speaking at today's American Foundation for Suicide Prevention event, "Promoting Equity in Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Outreach." We are grateful to have joined our partners in this critical conversation focusing on mental health equity in the field of mental health and suicide prevention. My favorite article on the "youth mental health crisis" in 2024 so far. From Lisa R. Fortuna, MD, MPH, M.Div. in the The New York Times today: "The Lancet commission’s decision to focus on the societal changes that contribute to mental health problems signals a paradigm shift in the field. While it is important to make sure that an individual’s mental health needs are addressed, psychiatrists and other mental health practitioners are increasingly recognizing the importance of stepping back to look at the broader problems that affect people, including racism, income inequality and barriers to accessing mental health services." The stories featured here underscore the urgent need for more tailored support systems and greater emphasis on mental wellness in our communities. Key takeaways: - ?? Young people are calling for mental health resources that go beyond traditional approaches and address their unique needs. - ?? Many are finding solace and community online, yet face challenges related to social media and its impact on their mental well-being. - ??There's a strong push for more open dialogues about mental health and fostering environments where young people feel heard and supported. As we reflect on these perspectives, it’s clear that our approach to mental health must evolve. It’s not just about providing resources but also about creating spaces where young adults can thrive and lead discussions about their own well-being. Let’s amplify these voices and work together to build a future where mental health is prioritized and youth are equipped to shape their own narratives. ????
