The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum debuted?Wendy Klemperer: Wrought Taxonomies—the first exhibition of outdoor sculpture at the historic summer estate of William Kissam Vanderbilt II—on Earth Day, April 22, 2023. Wrought Taxonomies?is the inaugural exhibition in the Vanderbilt Museum’s outdoor sculpture program and the institution’s second exhibition of contemporary art focused on the relationship between culture and animals. Visitors will see large pieces as they stroll the grounds of the Vanderbilt, one of the few remaining Long Island Gold Coast mansions. Smaller pieces suspended from trees wait to be discovered along the Vanderbilt’s hiking trail. Wrought Taxonomies?is the first outdoor sculpture exhibition at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum and its second exhibition of contemporary art. Its collected works are on long-term loan from the artist and various arts organizations around the United States. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Wendy Klemperer is an American artist whose work explores the continuity between human and animal worlds. Using salvaged steel, wrought iron, and other found metals, she creates evocative compositions of animal bodies in the landscape, capturing their poses, interactions, and gestures with unique sensitivity to their cognitive processes. On April 22, 2023, in celebration of Earth Day, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum debuted the outdoor sculpture exhibition “Wendy Klemperer: Wrought Taxonomies.” Supported by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, the exhibit can be viewed with general admission from Friday to Sunday and will be on display until April 2025.
