    Südzucker Sugar Division: On the road to operational excellence! ?? Südzucker Sugar Division's operational management and OPTIMUM ambassadors met at a Base Camp to discuss the progress and future strategies of the ground-breaking OPTIMUM project. OPTIMUM is our group-wide approach. It aims to cultivate operational excellence in all operational areas of the Südzucker Group. Here are the highlights of the Base Camp: ?? Participants presented the steps taken within the programme and shared valuable insights. ? A particular focus was on how shop floor management can increase attention to deviations and implement corrective actions faster. They also discussed how management can best support this process. ?? A highlight was the GEMBA walk at our sugar factory in Offenau, near Heilbronn. GEMBA, a lean management principle, means 'the actual place' and encourages direct observation and analysis on site. The base camp served not only as a platform for reflection, but also for planning the next milestones. Each plant and region defined the next steps and drew up a roadmap. Together, the participants defined the future direction to ensure that the OPTIMUM project remains a driver of our success. Congratulations to Head of Operational Excellence Lieve Segers and COO Philipp Schlüter on the fruitful discussions and inspirations at the Base Camp.     Südzucker Group Sustainability Day - inspiring and forward-looking ??? Our Südzucker Group Sustainability Day was an event full of inspiring talks, intensive workshops and exciting team-building activities. Members of the Südzucker Group Sustainability Board, Divisional Sustainability Managers - including Geert Van Aelst, Head of Sustainability Südzucker Sugar Division - and Sustainability Impact Area Owners as well as the Corporate Sustainability Team came together to discuss the status and further development of our sustainability strategy 'Growing in Balance'. ? In their opening remarks, Hans-Peter Gai (Chief Operating Officer and responsible for Sustainability) and Dr. Justyna Jaroszewska (Director Corporate Sustainability) reflected on the milestones achieved, such as the establishment of the Group Sustainability Team, the validation of emission reduction targets by the Science Based Targets Initiative and the development of visions for eight focus areas.? ? The day was filled with inspiring presentations and interactive activities, including a guest presentation on one customer’s journey to net-zero emissions, followed by best-practice examples from divisional sustainability managers. Participants then brainstormed on specific actions that could be developed and implemented across the Group in the areas of sustainability communication, sustainability training and employee engagement. ? The aim of the event, to bring together employees from all the sustainability committees of the Südzucker Group and thus promote group-wide exchange, was a complete success.     A big success and a great support on our way to climate neutrality: The Zeitz site of Südzucker Sugar Division receives funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs! ????? ? The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has selected Südzucker today for the signing of a climate protection contract. We will receive financial support to convert the sugar factory at the Zeitz site to climate-neutral production. This is an important milestone for our sustainability strategy ‘Growing in Balance’ and the focus area ‘emissions reduction’.? ? Südzucker has submitted three projects that will now be implemented in Zeitz:? ? ? Significant reduction of energy demand by using electrically driven heat recovery systems (EAWR) or heat pumps that are supplied with electricity from renewable sources.? ? ?? In-house production of biomethane from pressed beet pulp, as there is currently not enough biomethane or hydrogen available on the market.? ? ?? Conversion of the lime kiln to gas firing and use of the biomethane from our own production.? ? ? The funded measures also contribute to our group-wide emissions reduction targets, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), of reducing our own emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 50.4% by 2030 compared to 2018.     From Beet to Sweet: A Journey Through the Sugar Factory We recently had the pleasure of hosting some of our customers at the Offenau sugar factory, offering them a unique glimpse into the process of transforming sugar beets into sugar. Our tour began with some fascinating facts about sugar beet, including that it is made up of 70% water, almost all of which is used in the production process. Along the way, we explored the various by-products of sugar production, such as beet pulp for animal feed ????, molasses for fermentation and Carbokalk, a fertiliser made from lime sludge. One of the highlights for our visitors was watching the sugar beets being high-pressure washed off the vehicles. This step underscores the beet's journey from farm to factory, where samples are taken to determine sugar content before the beets are weighed and unloaded. Considering that most of the water ?? used in production is coming directly from the beets shows again what an all-round talent the sugar beet actually is. The feedback from our participants has been overwhelmingly positive. They found it fascinating to see at firsthand how sugar is made from sugar beet and to learn about the other products that sugar beet provides us with in addition to sugar.

    Climate Change and Sugar Beet Cultivation: Innovative Solutions from our Research Farm in Kirschgartshausen ?? ? Agriculture faces new challenges from climate change. At our research farm in Kirschgartshausen, Germany, we are testing pioneering approaches to make sugar beet farming more resilient. Dr Peter Risser, head of the Kirschgartshausen research farm, explains: ?We have been testing non-inversion tillage for some time now to reduce evaporation and retain moisture in the soil for longer.
