Honoring September 11th: A Call to Serve 23 years later, the proper words to express our nation's profound loss on September 11th, 2001 still elude us. However, as a country and within our local communities, we found ways to move forward from and give purposeful meaning to those devastating events. On this year's National Day of Service and Remembrance, we are reminded of the resilience, unity, and courage demonstrated by so many, particularly of our nation's First Responders. At Sudofy.Me, we believe in carrying forward the spirit of community and service in honor of these heroes. Here are some meaningful ways to contribute to our local Charleston communities, and to get in touch with your inner hero: 1. We all love a Monday off from our usual responsibilities, but a lot of us don't know exactly why or how Labor Day came to be! Here's a short history lesson, courtesy of Sudofy: Labor Day honors and recognizes the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the country. The holiday originated during the labor union movement in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being. The first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City, organized by the Central Labor Union. By 1894, 23 states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday. And there you have it!
