"can’t stop, won’t stop" posted on March 13, 2025 by Stories by Stef Blog song: don’t stop believing by journey There was a story in Greek mythology about a man, Sisyphus, whose punishment was to eternally roll a rock up a hill. Once he got the rock near the top it would roll back down to the bottom and he’d have to begin rolling it back up to the top again. Over and over and over again. He didn’t stop and wouldn’t stop. Although it’s unbeknownst to us why he continued, he did. At first glance it looks like an awful fate because he never reaches his goal of getting the rock to the top of the hill. But if I take a closer glance at this story it seems that the goal itself is the illusion. The joy isn’t in the completion. The joy is in the doing. Let me reframe this with a real world example. My husband was diagnosed in 2017 with seven liver tumors and after grueling treatments and brief periods of clear scans he now in 2025 has seven tumors in the liver again. That’s eight years of almost completing his goal of being cancer free. And there were many almosts. But here he is again back where he began. But what he got instead of his goal is still something to be celebrated. He got to see the kindness and support of family and friends. He got to see the passion and dedication of compassionate medical professionals. He got to live a humbler more blessed life in spite of and because of his cancer. Chemo is next week. Radiation is scheduled to start the week after that. And after that who knows. He can’t stop fighting. And he won’t stop fighting. Because the joy is in the doing.
