Together with our community partners, legislators, and employee volunteers, we were able to distribute turkeys to community organizations and non-profits throughout our service area! ?? When Hurricane Helene swept away the home of Chad Eggers, a field technician in our North Carolina operations, his world turned upside down. Despite losing his home, belongings and vehicles overnight, Chad continued showing up to restore water service to others affected by the storm. Unfortunately, insurance denied the family’s claim, and FEMA has yet to respond, leaving them in an impossible situation. This holiday season, Nexus invites others to embody the Nexus spirit of “We’ve got this!” by contributing to a GoFundMe established for the Eggers family. This past Saturday, we planted four trees and distributed 50 free fruit trees to community members at Fig/Oleander Park in Compton. This event is the culmination of an amazing collaboration between TreePeople and EntreNous Youth Empowerment Services, Inc., funded through California Natural Resources Agency , in which I taught an environmental science and green careers class at Compton YouthBuild over the last year and a half. Compton Mayor Emma Sharif and Assemblymember Mike Gipson supported this event from the seed of an idea, advocated for by 3 amazing young leaders, all the way to the event when they got their hands dirty planting trees! The event couldn't have happened without volunteers from Color Compton, The Compton Initiative, and Youth Advocates For Change, and I'd like to extend additional huge thank you to Water Replenishment District and Suburban Water Systems for their generous donations of sustainable goodies. What a beautiful day in community!
