Happy 10th birthday to the green roofs at the University of Pennsylvania’s Krishna P. Singh Center for Nanotechnology! This iconic building demonstrates that MEADOW SUCCESSION is possible on green roofs. . The building’s 5th floor amenity terrace and 6th floor upper roof feature BIODIVERSE green roofs that continue to support shifting plant communities. We designed the terrace meadow to showcase constantly-changing color and texture, while we transitioned the upper roof from Sedum to native grasses and perennials through innovative stewardship. ?? . Perched on the edge of an Adirondack lake in NY, this 1,000-square-foot MOSS ROOF packs an ecological punch. This tiny green roof, completed in 2015, supports five moss species and native ferns, while blending into the adjacent hillside. . We collaborated with Moss Acres and Watergrip to INNOVATE a method for supporting the unique horticultural needs of moss. Aspect, hydration, and slope stabilization drove the design, while Recover Green Roofs creatively addressed construction access by bringing construction materials to the site by boat. . For all you research lovers, you data junkies, you nerds! Today we’re celebrating the OG of research green roofs – the Chicago City Hall. This iconic, 20,300-square-foot project was completed in 2001 as part of an US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study to reduce the heat island effect and enhance air quality. . The design team also MONITORED PLANT PERFORMANCE in varying media depths. 20,000 Herbaceous plants, 112 shrubs, and 2 trees were planted in media ranging from 3-24 inches deep. Findings from this project influenced our, and consequently the rest of the green roof industry’s, future designs. . We are thrilled to be the green roof designer on this incredible project featured in today's edition of the New York Times. Our goal with the?Central Park Conservancy?was to provide a landscape connection that blends into the surrounding site. The green roof contains lightweight terrain, an accessible path, and an overlook to the pool / skating rink below. $160 Million Later, New Pool and Rink Will Replace Central Park Eyesore - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

Nature moves us through changes of seasons. The dynamic colors and textures that we experience with seasonality is one of our favorite things to design. Our technique, Resilient Planting Design, ensures that planting is always dynamic and intentional. Today we are highlighting our project, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center, to showcase how much impact designing for seasonality can have. We love being able to walk through a site and experience it in a different way depending on the time of year. Here’s your reminder to go outside and enjoy the unfolding of this season! . Designing green roofs in the face of climate change often involves anticipating high winds. We designed a WIND STABILIZATION system for the 16th floor of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s Pavilion that put green roof INNOVATION to the test. . The design deploys a beefy perimeter treatment that ballasts the green roof while helping to unitize the vegetated system. .
