We are thrilled to be the green roof designer on this incredible project featured in today's edition of the New York Times. Our goal was to provide a green roof landscape connection between the rink roof and the landscape along East Drive, integrating an accessible walking path into the sloped lightweight terrain with an overlook down to the rink and pool terrace. The landscape, supported by the green roof, will help restore a seamless transition between the woodlands and open park (trees and grass). $160 Million Later, New Pool and Rink Will Replace Central Park Eyesore - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

Nature moves us through changes of seasons. The dynamic colors and textures that we experience with seasonality is one of our favorite things to design. Our technique, Resilient Planting Design, ensures that planting is always dynamic and intentional. Today we are highlighting our project, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center, to showcase how much impact designing for seasonality can have. We love being able to walk through a site and experience it in a different way depending on the time of year. Here’s your reminder to go outside and enjoy the unfolding of this season! . Designing green roofs in the face of climate change often involves anticipating high winds. We designed a WIND STABILIZATION system for the 16th floor of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s Pavilion that put green roof INNOVATION to the test. . The design deploys a beefy perimeter treatment that ballasts the green roof while helping to unitize the vegetated system. . Several designers recently asked us, “what if every bus shelter contained a green roof?” We posed the same question more than a decade ago! Back in 2011 we designed and built Philly’s first BUS SHELTER GREEN ROOF—in partnership with the Philadelphia Water Department—across the street from City Hall. . We designed the green roof as a SCALABLE TOOLKIT and envisioned deploying the replicable infrastructure atop every bus shelter in the city. Is there an appetite for this INNOVATION in your city? . Fire’s a critical part of the meadow lifecycle, but what happens when the meadow is on a roof? We designed the meadow atop the EVPL Oaklyn library branch to burn! This RESILIENT approach required careful coordination with the architect on flashings drainage, and an irrigation system that keeps the base of the green roof system wet. . What do you think about DESIGNING MEADOW ROOFS TO BURN? . We love SLOPE STABILIZATION because there’s so much room for innovation. Our ballasted-stabilization design at Chicago’s TESTA PRODUCE uses a 30,000-sf flat green roof to support a 7,500-sf barrel roof that slopes up to a whopping 43 degrees. No fixed anchors are used to stabilize the green roof, thereby minimizing the risk of leaks. . Our founder, Charles Miller, P.E., was the brain behind this world’s first innovation, which is about to celebrate its 14th anniversary. We were delighted to offer our thought-leadership and contribute to the first LEED Platinum industrial building. . Keep water from pooling on the roof, you say? Not this time! The first WETLAND ROOF in the U.S. just celebrated its 22nd anniversary. We were delighted to collaborate with the design team to help make this innovative vision a reality for Chicago’s PEGGY NOTEBAERT NATURE MUSEUM. . This retrofit green roof supports 8-18 inches of media planted with more than 80 species of wetland, meadow, and upland plants. Comment below if you’ve seen other wetland green roofs – we’d love to learn about them! .
