Last week, Studio Luz Principal Hansy Better Barraza and Associate Sophie Nahrmann made the scenic trek out to the Sullivan County Catskills in Rock Hill, New York and joined the EverGreen Meadow team, Center for Discovery CEO Patrick Dollard and real estate consultants Denham Wolf Real Estate Services, Inc. to visit the beautiful site of EverGreen Meadow Academy, a future school and residential center that offers therapeutic interventions for middle-school girls with trauma backgrounds. We are proud to offer our support to EverGreen as they set out to create a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes healing for all of their students. We're proud to support and amplify two local organizations, Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (CSNDC) and Madison Park Development Corporation (MPDC), that work to build strong communities and whose visions align with ours at Studio Luz. Non-profit CSNDC serves Codman Square and South Dorchester, developing affordable housing and commercial spaces, creating economic opportunity, fostering community engagement, and promoting sustainability. Over in Roxbury, MPDC works to foster a vibrant, healthy neighborhood through impactful programming that supports the well-being and advancement of the community. Both organizations have been making positive changes in their communities for over 40 years — here’s to many more!

As we look at possibilities to provide mixed-use affordable housing in any transit-oriented development district, we consider the history of the area. Our work in Chelsea, in collaboration with MHP (Massachusetts Housing Partnership) is a great example — here we’ve examined historic images that show pre-industrial uses of the site and used that context to explore possible development scenarios that integrate light industrial uses to anchor mixed-use development. As we celebrate the life of former Mayor of Boston Thomas Menino and the tireless work he put in to expanding urban agriculture in the City of Boston, we remember his support for the Mattapan Mobile Farmstand, a project from Studio Luz's non-profit arm BR+A+CE that aimed to expand access to healthy, fresh, affordable food. In 2012, Mayor Menino joined community members as well as Representative Russell E. From renders to built, the facade for 120-122 Hancock Street in Dorchester is complete! The design of the facade features a play of depth that provides each homeowner with an opportunity for outdoor open space, while also creating a dynamic public realm experience. After an intense week we all needed a breather. The Studio Luz team decided to have some collective fun with an office retreat to Supercharged Entertainment MA, where we engaged in a little friendly racing competition. Congrats to Ignacio, Joshua, and Taylor who made it to the podium!

The 75 Dudley Street Homeownership project, led by Madison Park Development Corporation and designed by Studio Luz, is a four-story affordable condominium development with 15 units and a bike storage room that sits at the highly visible corner of Dudley Street and Guild Row. The proposed building design received approval at a recent Highland Park Architectural Conservation District Commission meeting, opening the door to the next steps in the process. We're proud to collaborate with MPDC on this project and to join them in their mission to foster a vibrant, healthy Roxbury neighborhood that supports the well-being and advancement of the community. Construction is well underway at 120-122 Hancock Street in Dorchester, designed by Studio Luz Architects. The proposed project will total fifteen (15) units and involve two (2) buildings with fifteen (15) affordable homeownership opportunities. Principal Anthony Piermarini, AIA and Senior Project Manager Leena Ismail is managing the construction phase of the project. The project is being developed by Urbanica, and project funding by MassHousing. This forthcoming 4-story residential building will provide accessible housing to first-time homebuyers in the community.
