We really enjoyed hearing from Anna Zivarts at the @cnu_ctx Congress for New Urbanism - Central Texas Chapter Annual Luncheon a couple weeks ago. Anna shared insights from her book "When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency", highlighting the challenges faced by nondrivers—including disabled individuals, youth, seniors, and low-income communities. We were inspired to take what we learned to expand on how we design with nondrivers in mind, especially since this method of design benefits everyone for a more walkable, connected, and inclusive city! We would encourage you to check out Anna’s work, including the Week Without Driving challenge and the Disability Mobility Initiative. We recently took a site visit to @brightoncentersa with @studioplearn to check out the construction progress of the playground renovations. We're loving how it's coming along and can't wait to see it built! Working closely with the school, we identified ways to reduce teacher blind spots for student safety, improve accessibility, provide thoughtful design for all abilities, incorporate play spaces with opportunity for therapy exercises, included outdoor classrooms and flexible learning spaces, foster care for outdoors through ADA vegetable gardens, enhanced the use of sensory play through musical equipment. We loved seeing the Bryker Woods Residence by Nick and Brittany Hunt with @huntarchitecture recently featured in the @archpaper! We worked with them to plant their front yard with a mix of native forbs, grasses, a sedge lawn area, and other hearty species.
