Introducing #TheEight, a new building at the intersection of NE 8th and 108th in #Bellevue, WA. We designed the chic signage system responding to the impeccable architectural and interior finishes of the communal spaces. The polished interior and exterior sign family appears throughout the ground and amenity floors. The layered forms bring The Eight’s 2D brand to life. 关于我们
Studio Matthews is a Seattle-based, woman-owned small business, and practice of designers, teachers, and makers. We are known for our award-winning design and elegant solutions, as well as our focus on environmental responsibility. We begin our work by looking beyond the edges of a brief for unseen potential and opportunities to connect. As advocates and partners, we help our clients see what their projects could be. Together, we work to uncover deeper relationships between a project, its context, and those who encounter it. We strive to create work that elicits surprise and delight as often as it helps to connect and engage. Our work takes many forms: Exhibitions, Installations, Wayfinding, Workplace, Branding, Illustration, Donor Recognition and Placemaking, as well as Landmark and other historically sensitive projects. Whatever the goal, we’ve found the work is most effective and powerful when it is fully integrated into the architecture or landscape, to be experienced as part of a complete environment. For that reason, we believe in and enjoy close collaboration with architects, landscape architects, and clients early in the design process, so that our work can successfully reinforce the project vision.

Across two food halls on this high tech campus, we designed a sign system to reflect the culinary variety on offer while also providing visual cohesion. To create the underlying consistency a single typeface is used throughout, but with a wide range of weights and styles. No stone was left unturned in the design process, down to the unique attachments that our team chose to complement each sign. Woo! Our exhibition “Give Me a Sign” at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum has won a prestigious SEGD Global Design Award. The exhibition celebrated the “Symbol Sourcebook” by Henry Dreyfuss. This iconic catalogue of universally recognized symbols also describes some of the first efforts to create a shared visual language that anyone around the world can understand. To reference the gridded interiors of the book and to protect the historic Carnegie Mansion in which the museum is housed, we designed freestanding, modular structures to hold all of the content. The exhibition wrapped up at the end of August, view the full project here — https://lnkd.in/dQG35AHk

Across two food halls on this high tech campus, the theme ‘urban food’ inspired the original black and white illustrations that weave throughout the space. Food references here, there, and everywhere pop up in cityscapes that also feature some familiar landmarks throughout the world, and weave into even the smallest niches throughout the buildings. To create just one of these larger-than-life original illustrations we drew almost half a mile of digital paths. That’s 22,000 individuals paths, and 255,000 points (not that we’re counting)! We’re launching our latest project: environmental graphics, signage, and installations across an ambitious 17-building, 70-acre expansion of a global tech company’s campus in Redmond, Washington. We collaborated with LMN Architects on four of these new buildings, and worked closely with Graham Baba Architects who led the design of two expansive food halls. Up first we’re showcasing the food halls, which together cover over 90,000 square feet. Offerings from over 30 vendors range from “Local Flavors” (supporting northwest businesses), to tasty fare from around the world. Amidst expansive original illustrations and a comprehensive signage system, we designed distinctive installations to invite staff to sit back, relax, and know that — whatever the flavor — it’s all good. This fall, UPrep Seattle students will return to an expanded campus with the new interdisciplinary ULab building, featuring a light-filled atrium, communal working spaces, and an engaging signage system. Mithun, who has worked with UPrep for over a decade, brought us on board to design the signage for this new flagship building and at the same time create a campus-wide signage masterplan. The 39,000 sq ft ULab project adds almost a full acre to the school’s existing 2.5 acre campus in north Seattle.
