The revitalized Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) brings together people, art, and nature, establishing a vibrant destination for culture and community in Little Rock. Our design works from the inside out, introducing a new central addition to unify the Museum’s eight existing structures and provide a bold new architectural identity for extensive renovations that accommodate AMFA’s growing visitor needs. Running through the entire building like a graceful stem, the atrium connects and guides visitors to the museum’s diverse programs—including its galleries, theater, and art school. At each end, the stem blossoms outward, forming distinctive entrances and social spaces that connect the Museum to the surrounding landscape and the city beyond. Approaching from downtown, the renewed Art Deco fa?ade of the Museum’s original 1937 building is revealed as a welcoming, accessible grand entry. To the south, an outdoor dining pavilion replaces the existing asphalt parking lot, opening the building to MacArthur Park for the first time. ??: Steve Hall and Iwan Baan

Our expansion of the California College of the Arts (CCA) has been nominated for the ArchDaily 2025 Building of the Year Awards! ?? Vote now to support our nomination: https://lnkd.in/eYPT8_gp Founded during the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century, CCA now encompasses 34 art and design disciplines. Our new building helps establish a creative ecosystem, bringing students and faculty together across new art-making facilities, learning spaces, and green spaces. At ground level, a hub of indoor-outdoor workshops seamlessly connects to CCA’s existing main academic building. With flexible fabrication and maker spaces, the open plan encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and adapts to evolving needs, mediums, and technologies develop. Above, the new biodiverse landscape transforms this formerly hard-scaped corner of San Francisco into an inviting outdoor environment for students, faculty, and visitors. Emerging from the building’s base are two mass timber pavilions, which house classrooms, art studios, and exhibition galleries. Their deep balconies extend creative and social spaces outdoors, taking advantage of San Francisco’s mild climate while providing shade for interior spaces, improving overall energy performance. ??: Jason O'Rear TEF Design, Atelier Ten, Arup, MEYERS+ ENGINEERS, Surfacedesign, Inc., Lotus Water, PritchardPeck Lighting, Coffman Engineers, Thornton Tomasetti, Urban Design Consulting Engineers (UDCE), Hathaway Dinwiddie

How can existing buildings be revitalized to take on new life and purpose? Join us this Thursday at the National Building Museum to hear Jeanne Gang present her approach to this challenge, as outlined in “The Art of Architectural Grafting.” Learn how projects like the Richard Gilder Center at the American Museum of Natural History and Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts expand on their original capacity—creating new utility and beauty while minimizing their carbon footprint. Following the presentation, Jeanne will join Deane Madsen, founder of BrutalistDC, for a conversation on how grafting can unlock new possibilities for existing Brutalist architecture. We hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/evECGRQy

Tom Lee Park was one of two Urban Design Honor Award winners at the 2025 AIA New York | Center for Architecture Awards! Designed in collaboration with SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC, Tom Lee Park strengthens connections between the Mississippi River and the city—restoring the area’s ecology by responding to the dynamic ecosystems of the river. We’re proud to see how this new urban park, whose design reflects input from thousands of Memphians, has transformed a significant piece of the riverfront into a public place where community life can flourish along the water’s edge. As noted by the jury, "We saw the relationship between the community engagement and design in how the final product unfolded. We saw their ambition as a civic park as well—they talked about creating a common ground—and we thought that translated to the way the architecture team and landscape architecture team collaborated, to where you almost can’t tell what might’ve been done by the architect and the landscape architect and where those boundaries end. We thought that was a really powerful message." Thank you to the jury, and our partners for helping realize this incredible waterfront project! Today, we're looking back at 2024 - an incredible year of design, discovery, and connection at Studio Gang. ?? Projects ?? This year we celebrated the opening of five buildings, spanning more geographies and typologies than ever before. In Lexington, we completed the reuse of a tobacco warehouse into a new learning environment for the University of Kentucky College of Design. In San Francisco, we completed two projects: an expansion of California College of the Arts that featured innovative mass-timber pavilions; we also developed a new model of collaborative urban design, resulting on our new residential building Verde at Mission Rock. In Denver, we opened Populus, our first free-standing hotel. And just last month, our first project in France, The University of Chicago John W. Boyer Center in Paris, began welcoming students. We also broke ground on the Marlboro Agricultural Education Center in Brooklyn and Samuel H. Scripps Theatre Center in upstate New York and topped out on two buildings in Boston: the One Milestone West lab building, and the mass-timber David Rubenstein Treehouse for Harvard University. And Jeanne released “The Art of Architectural Grafting,” a book synthesizing a decade of practice and research on how architects can find creative inspiration in the environmental imperative to bring new life to older structures. ?? Recognition ?? We were honored to see our projects recognized widely, from the University of California, Santa Cruz Kresge College Expansion winning honors from The Architect's Newspaper's Best of Design Awards, AIA California, AIA San Francisco, and AIA Chicago to the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts taking home an Honor Award in Architecture from The American Institute of Architects (AIA)'s National program. Jeanne received the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from ULI Chicago and was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor in France. ?? Studio Milestones ?? We gathered for our tenth year at Camp Wandawega, connecting and recharging in the great outdoors, while holding our most competitive table tennis tournament yet. We moved into a new office in New York and will start the year in a new space in San Francisco. We want to thank our wonderful clients, collaborators, and friends for making 2024 a year filled with creativity, exploration, and new successes. With more exciting projects and new on the horizon, we’re looking forward to 2025!
